I really do love how they would have to put off the new car or the nice trip to Italy. I wonder what BMW, Audi or Benz they were looking at. Seriously no cat is worth that much money, you could help so many people in this city. Why is this even the top story on the page?

and another thing, they bring up God and how they have no children etc this and that. Maybe God is trying to tell you to help other people than to spend 14000 dollars on something that will die in 10 years.

Actually, a lot of good research has come from the veterinary field, mostly in the treatment of race horses (those metal plates and pins you have in your broken leg). I can remember using MSM, DMSO, and glucosamine/chondroitin before they appeared on the human market. Another one to look at is cetyl myristoleate.

I was desperate enough to want a liver transplant for my first dog when he was ailing from liver cancer, but I knew that was unrealistic. It would have been to serve my desires rather than his. Now, I feed my dogs raw food, limit their vaccines, and let them enjoy the lives they have running in the yard.

I won't knock this couple's choice to save their cat...if the money's there and the prognosis good, well go for it. I love that the clinic sent them home with another one! Lucky vet students that got to witness the surgery!

Do the right wing nutjob idiots have to infiltrate every forum on the Chicago Tribune Web site? You people do nothing more than confirm to the world why we should be thankful your presidential candidate isn't in office.

$100 to put a @#$*& fish to sleep? You have got to be kidding. I once paid $15 to put a gerbil to sleep, though, in 1973. Inflation, apparently.

Only a "god fearing" man would espouse and ignorant statement such as this. You can't even speak with proper grammar, ignoramus.

If someone decides to spend $14k on their cat, and they have the money, why are you even questioning it? IT'S NOT YOUR MONEY! THEY MAY DO WITH IT AS THEY PLEASE!!! Just because YOU wouldn't do the same, does not mean that they SHOULD'NT do with it as they please. Worry about your own existance.

I was thinking the same thing. I thought people just flushed goldfish.

As for the $14k cat, as much as I love my dog, I don't know that I would've spent that much...especially if his chances were good. That kind of expense is way over the top for a pet even if it is part of your family (and mine is).

Cat people are offensive. They aren't your children!!! They're just stupid cats!!

Spend your money helping poor kids, if you care so damn much about animals. People are animals, too.

People think it's crazy to spend $14K on a cat because of "all of the people it could help," but when you see someone drive a $40K car, do you say "hey, a $25K car will do just as well and last just as long -- how come you're not using that extra $15K to help other people?"

25 years ago, friends thought I was crazy to spend $300 on my cat -- while they happily spent >$500 on this amazing new invention, the CD player (which I did not buy at the time).

Bottom line: Their cat, their money, their choice.

The smart thing would have been to let the cat die and give the 14K to a charity. After all, its only a cat, just go get another one. They are replaceable.

Good for them. I'd rather spend $14,000 on my cat than on helping poor people in Chicago. At least my cat will never carjack or shoot me.

This article just shows you that the world is full of suckers.
$14,000 for a kidney transplant on a cat?! Let the poor cat die, get a new cat at the shelter and donate the money to a homeless shelter. I'm sure they could use it wisely.$100 to put down a fish, lord just flush the thing down the toilet.

And to all of those saying their money.. their choice. You are right, it's their choice but obviously they are living in another planet were reality doesn't seem to exist.
