Being an east coast girl, I always thought the same about California. And my brother lived there for decades and HATED it; got out as soon as he could. But then I went to San Fran last summer and LOVED it! It's beautiful the people were friendly and the climate was PERFECT. But it's WAAAAAY too expensive!!!
California is a very varied place. LA is not SF and SF is not LA. It is like two different sensibilities, or even three (or sixteen) really; the Bay Area, LA, and Northern California (rednecks and stuff), then there's also the central valley (not to be confused with LA's "the valley"...San Fernando) around Bakersfield/Fresno, etc...it's got a whole 'nother vibe. Then there's the gold country...

I'm from the Bay Area, I refuse to live in LA, but I wold consider San Diego. I don't like the valley (either of them) nor will I live out in the desert (like San Bernadino, Palm Springs...) but I do like the central coast around San Luis Obispo but not actually IN SLO because it gets hot. Anything south of Pismo though...it's got an LA vibe.

Yeah, Jersey...I just don't know. I'm still dithering. The humidity in FL would probably kill me too.

I was just telling my daughter last night that I LOVE Chicago. If it weren't for those horrible winters, I'd be there!
I could probably do Chicago (except for the winter thing) because I am a city girl at the core. I don't do well if I'm very far away from being able to walk to get coffee/a newspaper (let's just pretend ok?), an order of Ravioli, etc., whenever the mood strikes me.

I did manage to live at the beach for several years and needed to kind of plan ahead because ti was a "small town" and most stuff closed reasonably early. It was a tourist town though so there were still options, just not so much at 3 am.

This pisses me off to no end. That's home. I should be able to live in the place I'm from and not have it be in some roach infested shack in the Tenderloin. It's been priced so far out of the reach of the average person it's ridiculous. You pretty much have to be some high level Apple/HP/Microsoft exec to afford it. I'm just one of the hoi palloi....

Yeah, it's totally crazy! ANd I feel the same way about where I am from (NY), but I think SF is even worse! We have friends that live there but only because they inherited a row house (that needs a whole lot of work). They are struggling financially, but manage to get work done themselves. If they didn't inherit it, though, they'd never be able to live in the city!!!

It's such a shame. It's one of the coolest cities I've been to.
