Many metro areas like Chicago, New York, San Francisco, need fund to improve their aging systems. It is funny how we have to fight for these funds but we spend $1 trillion dollars for a false war in Iraq. All officials from all levels of government should be fighting for federal funds to get the buses and trains that will be the best in the world. How can Chicago even think of getting the Olympic Games, when their mass transit isa mess!

If the CTA knew that their funds was declining why did they put up the pink line. I always use the train and it never killed me to switch trains to get to a certain parts of the city

Maybe you can send all the illegals from your state and they can drive the buses and trains for $2.00 HR! Never mind we have way to many already!I hope the CTA goes down the toilet if you cant run a business with the money you have shut down we in the burbs are tired of bailing out Chicago! I'm lucky i dont buy anything in the collar counties so the only money they will ever get from is the money i cant control them from getting!I will be moving shortly from crook state!

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before Mayor Quimby (aka Blago) pulls a "Daley" and privatizes the RTA. Then they'll just jack the rates up on ridership.

All this griping because of the proposed "free rides for
seniors" - I recently turned 65 and retired after over 40
years of working and riding
the CTA in Chicago. I thought it was nice to recognize Seniors for a
change. No, I am not one
of "those millionaires
who happened to be 65 year-
old - if I were, I wouldn't
be riding the CTA - I could
afford a taxi, if not own
driver. I am a senior
whose only income is social
security - shame on you Mr.
Madigan and Mayor Daley.
Let me also remind you,
gentlemen, that for many
years I have been paying
hefty property tax for
education, healthcare,
housing, etc. for those
single mothers with
fatherless children, not
to mention all the waste
at City Hall and Cook
County.

I sounds like money continues to be a problem with public transist in Illinois and in Chicago in particular. What will be the economic impact of free rides to seniors on CTA, Pace and Metra? How will the systems deal with the loss of revenue and possible overcrowding that may slow the system down further? Can the Legislature amend the bill after it has passed and eliminate the free rides?

Now that they've taken care of operating budgets, we need to make Illinois FIRST-type legislation a routine for dealing with capital needs. However, getting rid of corruption alone won't fill the funding gap, even if Fitzgerald succeeds in getting convictions on every crooked elected official in this state. It is going to take new taxes to fund the repairs and renovations we need. Compared to other states Illinois does not tax the rich very much, and does not tax services at all. Those are the places we can go to find revenue.

And we will need to get revenue from those places, because other areas are tapped out despite our apparently low overall tax burden. The personal exemption from the income tax is too small, property taxes in poorer school districts are too high due to the state failing to meet its constitutional obligations on school funding, and the sales tax on goods is way too high.

Otherwise we continue to let our facilities fall apart, and people and especially businesses will continue to leave.

We can't go on with business as usual, letting our infrastructure rot, and continuing to tax some things and some people through the nose while barely taxing others at all.

The casino idea is the worst thing I've ever heard of. The licenses go to favored political cronies, who profit massively from the casino revenues, and not nearly enough is left over for public needs even though people spend just as much as would be levied through taxes.

ejhickey, the lege can pass all the bills it wants, but they need to muster a three-fifths vote to overcome an almost certain veto from Blago on the free fares.

I grew up in and lived in Chicago for 45 years. Transit used to be operated more like a private business, but has evolved into more of a social service agency in recent years. Through the 1960's CTA used to survive from the farebox, for capital and operating costs. In the 1970's we started using federal money for new buses. The real killer was the unfunded mandate, passed in 1991, called the Americans with Disabilities Act. For most agencies, that drove farebox recovery rates below 25%. If the Feds are going to drive up costs, however well justified, they should help with funding.

My personal solution to deteriorating CTA service, was to load a U-Haul truck, in 1990, and head for Seattle.

Ron Huberman is not worth the $280,000 a year. Wow! A brain dead kaka-roach could of also do the rant and raving of doomsday. No experience in the transportation field, how can i get a overpriced job like this with "NO" experience with the city of CORRUPTION...er ah I mean Chicago.
It is great to see that my taxes pay for someone with no job experience

I actually think huberman is doing a good job. After 10 years of Kruesi driving the cta into the ground he is fixing things like the blue and red line slow zone problems in record time. This was something kreusi said "couldn't be fixed" or if it could would take up to five years.

Also the addition of hybrid or hydrogen buses in an effort to reduce diesel consumption is dollars well spent.

What a con game the City of Chicago is playing on the rest of the State of Illinois! 2 days ago the Trib, and the rest of the media made the public believe the crisis is over? Now they come back and say we need billions for repair which will require more taxes. This is like a card game you know your going to lose. Yes the CTA for years put money into increases in salaries, and benefits with no maintenance being done. Now without cutting back or increasing fares the CTA wants the rest of the State to pay for their mismanagement.

I believe in Huberman, actually. In less than a year in his position, he helped change a law that's been plaguing the systems for 25 years, he helped broker the union deal, he rearranged management and made some serious cost cuts. Let's keep this guy. He knows what he's doing, it seems. Kreusi, on the other hand, was an idiot, as is Blago.
