Kanye West gives free concert for Chicago students

The bass boomed, sending vibrations from the floor to a sea of hands pumped toward the gilded ceiling of the Chicago Theatre. Full Story

yay for David Abrams and Kanye West and yay for CPS students who are working toward a goal with the added benefit of learning responsibilities and getting smarter, to boot! I congratulate them on their success and I challenge them to work toward these goals -better grades, reliability, personal responsibility - even without free concert tickets as the prize.

Why does it take some kid from Highland Park to think of this?
Even so, giving kids rewards for doing what they are supposed to do just rewards mediocrity. Oh wait....this is CPS.

Because kids from HP are taught to think...about others.

So, did West take the time to hire real musicians or was the show programmed? Just curious because music has been shown to help cognitive functions but music has also been replaced by computers. Which side of the fence is Mr. West leaning?

oh how wonderful. an ego driven rapper gives a free concert that costs him nothing and the media makes him the new darling of the altruistic set. He's a thug, spewing worthless crappy childish lyrics to teens. He could give free concerts for the rest of his life and it would not make up for the damage his lyrics and his behavior has wrought on the uncomprehending, discernless young. Within a month he will be back to his old narcissitic ways. Once a thug always a thug

Why not let those kids come to Blues Fest this weekend to show them music does not come from pushing buttons but from actual instruments. But, mostly, from the soul.

Rewarding kids for going to school? Give me a break. And doing so with some gang banger thug? Excellent role model. What is this city coming to? Just creating more problems for the future.

it's kind of sad that you have to resort to bribing kids with tickets to concerts but at least Kanye West is trying to send a positive message to those who need it most. If only every rapper and hip hop artist would do the same...I wonder if things might be different in some of these neighborhoods.

I wonder, did Kanye West tell the students that AIDS was created and introduced into Africa by the U.S. Government, as he did at the Live-8 concert in Philadelphia a few summers ago?

Can black people do anything to help their own? Even if you all don't agree with it, please understand people are using the resources that are available. But we all know once blacks attempt to clean themselves up, ask to be treated equally, and have control over their own neighborhoods, history shows us who steps in to make sure...that doesn't happen. I ain't playing the race card people. I'm just purely stating whats a historical FACT.

Hats off to those responsible for show! A free concert to help kids get their act together and people are complaining about that? Once a thug always a thug? Yam Fam, you are right! We have to do what we have to do because the 'powers that be' are not for us but against us. Let's use every tool we have to save our-selves.
