He didn't call her his late wife, nor did he say he was a widower raising a child. I think it is fair to assume he was not married to the girls mother when she died. If the wife's parents disapproved of him from a divorce, that might also explain why his in laws did an end run round him with the car and money
Good observation

Tonka,
It is not a preconcieved misconception about people who abuse alcohol.
Alcoholism is a disease, ask the CDC.

Tonka,
I've never seen anyone throw up from smoking too much pot.
Can't say the same about booze.

Tonka,
It is also safe to say that there is a great deal of violence associated with alcohol abuse and which is virtually non-existent in people who smoke just weed

Tonka,
I agree, there are some total losers who smoke dope.
But you can't pigeonhole someone as morallly bankrupt because they smoke pot.
There are some very creative and highly functioning people who smoke weed on the sly.
I could name some names if I want to.....Bob Marley and the Whalin' Wailers

The comparison is parents trying to control their kid's behavior with money. In that regard, these two cases are exactly the same
hs vs college

Child parents legally responsible for vs one that they are not

That case was one where the chold felt entitled to her parents money. This one is nothing of the sort.

That case, the child decide to move out and emsncipate herself. Pare ts said fine. Your on yiur own now. This case, dad took money away and is still trying to find another way to control her

Apples vs watermelons

I didn't do that, Mister Tonka.
You're just being argumentative.

Tonka,
I'm just sayin' that society in general takes a discriminatory view towards people who smoke pot.

I don't have any horror stories about people who smoke pot.
But I have innumerable ones that center on alcohol abuse.

You might not perceive it that way, but to the reader, at least this one, that's how you come across. My perception based on reading YOUR words is that you demonize any use of alcohol.

You should explain to the grandparents that you stopped giving her money because she spends it on illegal drugs. Then they can make their own decision.

But most parents try that at one time or another.
Your raise this little mite and even though they are an adult you still want to to tell them what to do. It's hard to just stop. Even when intentions are good.
At least he's asking advice and trying. Most parents just tell you off and don't care how you receive it.

I'd rather alcohol be illegal than pot.
Alcohol kills too many innocent people.

. Not really. Some parents can't separate and need to continue to control their kids and some realize that as the twig is bent so grows the tree and then stand back and occasionally toss on some fertilizer.

My girls are in their early 20's. based on my friendships with their friends' parents I don't think guiding former "Little mites" is a common approach at all. Sounds rather patronizing in a literal and linguistic sense.

Patronizing? Odd word. Little mites (british slang) referring as children. Parents sometimes forget their little ones (whatever word you feel isn't patronizing) are grown.
I still think lw has good intentions and not sure how to deal with it.*shrug*

<quoted text>And additionally, this is very puzzling.
<quoted text> How does someone like this, who is 'very much' against it, marry someone who does it freely in the house in front of children? Its 'very much' against dad's values, but seems right in line with mom's.
He also does not say that he did not smoke it ever, just that he did not do so around the daughter. I'll bet he did, or he would have made it clear that he had never used it at all.
Sounds like a hypocrite to me.

I keyed in on this line:

"this is very much against my values".

But as long as she slaps the label of "hypocrite" on him, it's much easier to discredit him. Better to assume he's a raging pot-head who just doesn't want his daughter to do it. It's the only way she knows how to make an argument.
