U.S. undercuts clean-air rule

Looking to bolster the fight against childhood lead poisoning, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last month approved a tough new rule aimed at clearing the nation's air of the toxic metal. Full Story

But isn't that exactly what government is supposed to do!! In other words, and while pretending to be strongly committed to protecting the public's health and safety, in reality doing everything possible to create an unsafe and unhealthy environment.

This was a fault ten years ago and is a fault today. Let the EPA put a few more million out of work.

The EPA is hell bent on legislating manufacturing out of existence in this country. Nice to see someone was paying attention. I'm sure the Supreme Court will over turn this.

These companies have one motive for fighting these regulations and that's profit. They whine about not making money if they have to follow tighter pollution regulations. That's pure baloney. Look at how things have change since the 1960's when we started to get most of our regulations (remember Lake Erie on fire from pollution). The EPA protects us from industries that would pollute more so they can make more money. Thank god we have about 60 days until the village idiot leaves office. Too bad it's not sooner.

I'm a democrat but I voted for Mark Kirk because of his opposition against BP dumping in Lake Michigan.

Bush's rule makes perfect sense for the future. Lead poisoning easily reduces children's IQ by up to 40 percent, thus creating adult idiots if and when they grow up - and virtually all idiots vote NeoCon/Republican.

lead exposure was good for Bush, it will be good for the rest of us!

1600 tons of lead emissions per year is a very low number if that is for the entire US.

I would be interested in seeing a more detailed risk analysis, since this article doesn't cite any actual studies. Just because lead is emitted into the air doesn't mean that this is the reason children have elevated Pb levels in their blood.

The primary culprits for Pb in our children is lead water pipes (which is regulated by Dept of Housing, not EPA). Municipal water supplies are clean, but once the water enters the old water system with lead pipes, it will pick up lead.

The second source, as this article states, is from kids eating paint chips. Again, this is a Dept of Housing issue, not EPA.

If the goal is to lower blood Pb levels, we should address these issues since we would get more results per $ spent. Regulations should define a goal and then be examined as to whether the regulation is the most efficient way to reach that goal. I don't think limiting airborne Pb emissions is the best way to reach the goal of lower blood-Pb levels in kids.

What??? George Bush is helping polluters evade stricter regulations that would make us all healthier and safer?

I'm shocked.

Really, how many more days until he is done ruining our country and our planet?

The criminal administration of GW Bush, has been brought and paid for by lobbist a long time ago. He is obligated to continue his path of death and distruction to the American people in order to further the will of pulitors and contamination profiteers.
I hope for, and look forward to, the day GWB and his criminal co-conspiritors are tried and convicted for their crimes against the American people as well as against humanity world wide.

The White House individuals responsible for the sleight of hand described in the article have attacked American children, their parents, and communities and should be brought to justice.

Tribune investigation indeed. How about investigating the corruption of Crook County or the Annenberg Project.

Safe stories and pandering. What a disgrace the Trib has become.

Glad the current administration is on its way out. If we had the same group running our country for 8 more years we would be living straight out of the movie "Idiocracy.."

Whine all you want you self-righteous secular humanist child-huggers.
If the Almighty, speaking directly to W through His lobbyists, as we know he does, wants more lead in our atmosphere, then nothing is going to stop W from doing His bidding. As he has said many times, he is very comfortable with every single decision he has ever made because he has faith. Just who do you think you are to question a man's faith? You intolerant terrorist-loving socialists? Amen.

No...we're already living in Das Kapital with all the corporate welfare being given away. The new administration,(hopefully) will put a stop to it and let some of these greedy sob's go bankrupt.
