Full story: Chicago Tribune

The victim of a suspected arson near Mayor Richard Daley 's Michigan vacation home said Friday investigators told him early on that the April 24 fire that destroyed his home appeared to be deliberately set.

I hope they caught the person that did it. Thank God no one was harmed or lost a life over nonsense.

This just seems so far-fetched. I wish the police hadn't said anything; it was upsetting enough for the people to lose their house without such wild speculation by the police. It might even have been an accident. If it was the work of an arsonist targeting Daley, he sure was a dufous. Besides, I bet Daley gets hundreds of threatening letters and most of them are just from people blowing smoke.

Agreed. This is way premature. My guess is that the cops have no leads, and so under pressure from Daley and the other bigwigs at the little MI resort community, are publicly grasping at straws to make it look like they are doing something.

My advice to whoever wrote the letter: Get a lawyer and turn yourself in, before the Chicago cops find you and torture a "confession" out of you.

So some stupid jerk risked the safety of human beings who could have been hurt or worse by starting a fire, all over some stupid animal?

It just shows how screwed up some jerk's priorities are.

Daley was not even harmed in any way, yet it is all about Daley and not the real victims.

Daley was the intended victim and I agree with the VC from CBOE-- "I hope they catch the guy. It's creepy."

I agree - what proof is there? "Somebody said something to somebody"
what is that? Isn't that what they call "heresay" in court?
Sounds to me like they are desperate to pin it on some poor fool.

Whoever targeted Mayor Daley's vacation home and set fires because of the cougar killing is reprehensible.

People have lost their summer homes and could have been killed by these fanatical animal rights activists.

The courts, voting booth, and media are areas to redress grievances with duly elected public officials. Vigilante justice is unacceptable in civilized society.

The person responsible should be given a stiff prison term. The very essence of democracy demands that we protect our duly elected public officials from being attacked or terrorized.

You are misquoting the article. it sounds like there was a credible threat. Also the word is hearsay- not "heresay" and this concept is only relevant in court. Hearsay is a valuable tool during criminal investigations. The suspicious nature of this fire warrant investigation by both local and federal law enforcement.

"Torture a confession"?
Do you really think the CPD cares about Daley? Has your head been stuck in the sand at Grand Beach for years? Daley hates the CPD, he always has. His father on the other hand respected his police department. The vast majority of CPD members I know would not go out of their way to help him in any way.

Has anyone checked to see what Kwame "Hip Hop" Kilpatrick was doing at the time? Although, now that I think about it, these two Democratic criminals would have far more in common than not... scratch that.

Anyone think this could be linked to the E.L.F.? They've been known to set fires in protest of perceived crimes against nature.

If anything it would be ALF, not ELF; but as I said on another thread, they have the skills to actually hit their target and prevent collateral damage.

This is more likely the work of another one of Daley's numerous enemies. If the CPD hates Daley as much as an above poster claims, perhaps they did it....

So the CPD only obtains tortured confessions when it is not in Daley's interest? That's good to know....

This is nothing more than a diversion from the mountain of criticism being heaped on Daley for his under-handed and deceitful support of the Children's "museum" grab of free land in Grant Park.

You people who use this arsonist as a means to bash Daley are complete morons. Arsonists are killers plain and simple. Whatever your opinion on Daley, he does not deserve this type of violent crime against him, his or his neighbors property. Please try, again I know this is hard for some of you, to think before you post.
