Interesting take by squishy. So if granny's and old school 90 year old racist, what good would come from telling her. Doubt it would suddenly make her change. Keeping her out of the loop might be in lw's best interest
But the lw WANTS grandma to know. And it's already been nearly a year and a half. Regardless of the circumstances, granny will be upset it's been kept from her for so long. I'm surprised she hasn't found out by accident by now. Unless granny is on her death bed and will die soon, I see no good keeping this a secret.

I got it! The lw is in a gay biracial marriage and the baby is a product of artificial insemination! Too much for ol granny to handle.

i pwrsonally don't care one way or another. To me, if someone tells granny, fine. If no one tells her, I'm fine with that too. Sure it would seem odd to me to deliberately hide that info from her, but at the same time, I don't feel like she has any RIGHT to know.

If I was the mother of that child, there would be nobody who could talk me out of telling my beloved grandmother about her from the get, regardless of the color of her skin or the circumstances of her birth.
If she is indeed a beloved granddaughter, how did she explain not seeing Granny for the 6+months that the pregnancy would be obvious?

I would tend to agree with Squishy except I think the LW would have mentioned that.

Regardless, I think thee is money somewhere and the parents (LW's parents) are worried what Granny may do.

LW needs to consider what she will do if Granny does not react with loving acceptance. It is possible that the parents know the mother/MIL well enough that it is LW they are protecting and not Granny.

I do. I believe you have the RIGHT to know if you have a sibling, I believe you have the RIGHT to know if you have a daughter, I believe you have the RIGHT to know if you have a granddaughter, or a great granddaughter. I don't "get" family secrets and don't tolerate them.

I believe that the participants are selected for their potential to, um, entertain. In exchange they get a free DNA test and probably trip expenses paid. Whatever. And while I have personally never known anyone racist enough to reject an innocent, mixed-race child, I will take your word for it that such people exist.

I have known people racist enough to reject an innocent mixed child. They do exist. I've also known several people who have told me that they let go of their prejudice when they first saw/held their grandchild, realizing that the hate they had carried was all hot air, and that they just couldn't keep it up because it would mean hating a baby that was their blood, too.

Daaghter/son. Yes. You have a right to know. Other than that? No. You might as well argue the right to know if you have a 3rd cousin twice removed.

Forget the letter.

Hypothetical.
Jane lives 2000 miles from home. Visits very infrequently. Gets knocked up. Decides to keep child and put child up for adoption. Never tells ANYONE back home. You feel her parents have a RIGHT to know? Why. Its HER business and HER decision if she chooses to share.

Hypothetical.
Megan has some toxic abusive parents. She has cut them out of her life. She is much happier for it. She got married and moved on with her life. Now has a baby. Parents know nothing of her life. Not that she's married. Not that she has a child. You think they have a RIGHT to know? F that.

No one has ant RIGHT to know anything about you that you don't want them to know. Granted you have no right to prevent anyone in the know from telling them, but that's a different matter.

1: Gross.

2: Ick, so tasteless if you can't go a sentence without that vulgar word.
I hate G-D and the eff word.my friends are respectful of that, nor do I have friends who bomb them all the time.
