What Happened to Cairo, Illinois?

Nov 29, 2010 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: DarrenBarefoot.com

I recently read this story on Reddit , the popular social news site: On Sunday there was a bad car wreck on I-24 near Paducah, KY, which shut the interstate highway for several hours.

I know you told the truth. Cairo government has been rotten for 60 years. And it was that rotten government who let Cairo decay into a total ruin. Well I still have memories of that old booming Cairo I fell in with as a child. Fulton, KY has had the same type rotten government that let Fulton fall into total ruin too.

Hello again FYI, Actually I am a Chicagoan whose family lived in Fulton, KY. So my daddy would bring us through Cairo to cross the river at Cairo. I can remember traveling late at night and seeing beautiful Christmas decorations in Cairo. My granddaddy Wm. Aquilla Jourdan was one of the welders who erected the Ohio River Bridge. I do not know when the bridge was began. But I know the bridge was finished fall 1938 because my grandparents moved to Mayfield, KY for the next job. And my mother was born there in Mayfield shortly after the bridge was open to traffic. Yes, I still love Cairo --it was my kind of town as it was in the 1960ís. Oh, never mind me I am just rambling on about the good old days. Merry Christmas to you and all of Cairo.

Say FYI, do you remember back when there was no I-57? I can remember when there were no roads except the 2 lane highways. Cars leaving Chicago on holidays would be slow, sometimes traffic would be jammed for many miles and bumper to bumper. Then I-57 started in the 1960ís and at first it was in 3 long stretches Finally it was finished from Chicago to Cairo Exit I. Later after that I-57 finally went on to MO. Yes, Illinois is the best place to be in the whole world.

Yep. I remember when I-57 hadn't even been thought of. I was a kid, but those trips to Memphis and St. Louis (no I-55 either) were on winding 2-lane roads. Of course, people didn't travel like they do now.

There was a man from Fulton who owned the Dotty Shoppes there and here. We were trying to think of his name. Do you know it?

No I don't know him but will go to Fulton Topix and ask. Maybe somebody will tell us his name. If I get an answer I will let you know.

I'll be driving through Cairo in April, on my way to Fulton, KY, crossing the very bridges mentioned here. Lovely area with a lot of history...

His last name was Fuller. I put a leather coat in layaway in 1968. He let me pay on it, when Christmas rolled around and I still owed money, he told me to continue to pay and let me have that coat. He was a fair mined person, me being a person of color making pennies, still in school he trusted me and I kept my word and paid him off. Cairo, will always be home to me.

I was a high school kid, working for a pittance when I put a tan leather coat on lay-away at Dotties. I wore that coat for years,
You're right. Mr. Fuller was a good man.

I remember back as far as 50 years ago and you are 100% correct. In 50 years Cairo is nearly gone. I loved Cairo when I was a kid --it was really somewhere to be in those days.50 years ago I-57 was not there. As I-57 came in during the 1960's Cairo leaders should have gotten some good companies in there for the citizens to work at.You Cairoites need to round up a few well educated citizens that know how to get grants for things the City needs then vote them into office. There is more to running any city than just merely paying the bills. You need news riverwalls and gates too otherwise Cairo is going to get wiped outright along with your homes. Evidently I still love Cairo otherwise I would not care.

Other than it being a complete crap-hole, nothing has happened to it.

You've got an entire group of people there that feel so entitled they would rather do drugs and draw welfare than do an hour of honest work.

Businesses do not want to build in a community where 3/4 of the applicants cannot pass a drug test.
