Mental trouble is no less real

Thank you so much for writing on such a critical public health issue.
Many people don't realize that suicide is the SECOND leading cause of death for men ages 25-34 and that the majority of people who die by suicide are men of working age. I applaud your efforts to bring to light the biological basis for these brain disorders and the frustrations many of us feel for the lack of adequate treatment for all those who suffer in silence.
As a psychologist, mental health advocate, faculty member and survivor of my brother's suicide, I see these issues from many perspectives. Our foundation started the first suicide prevention program exclusively dedicated to suicide prevention in the workplace -- for more information visit www.WorkingMinds.org .

Unfortunately, there's more to it than what has been represented in the article you've responded to. This is indeed a very serious issue, and one that for the most part is being kept from the public, not addressed in terms of real help for these returning veterans, and swept under the carpet by the politicians who placed these men and women in such terrible circumstances.
We have seen the bumper stickers, "Support our Troops" attached to the slick SUV's and late model cars powered by the oil derived gasoline that wars are fought over. At what cost to those who are doing the fighting and dying so that we Americans can maintain our comfortable lifestyles, even as we agonize over the effects of the recession on our comfort zones?
Maybe some of us have even lost our jobs or are behind in mortgage payments. Things are tough for some here at home. However, for some of the bumper sticker people, life and prosperity go on with scarcely any disturbance or discomfort at all.....while there are wars raging in Iraq, and Afghanistan, and blood flowing like oil-by the barrel.
But lets put a fresh bumper sticker on our SUV's to make ourselves feel a little better, and ease our conscience. Some of the bumper stickers are getting a little tattered. We were told "our troops" would be coming home beginning last February. They aren't. In fact, many have been re-deployed multiple times.
What about our troops? Are these the innocent fresh faced kids we waved goodbye to as we sent them off to fight for America's freedom on foreign shores? Um, that is what we sent them to fight for wasn't it......or was it Iraq's freedom? No, that came later, after the "reasons" were altered after it was found that there were no weapons of mass destruction.
So-what's happened to these fresh faced kids, now that the years have gone by and they are now seasoned combat vets, like 007 with a license to kill? Take a good hard look at the enclosed link and be ready to get sick to your stomach. This is the real war, and this is the damage done, and now that they have killed and killed again, some have come home, and someone forgot to turn off the killing machine.
