Yes. Like half of us on this board were born in 1977.:P

<shakes head> The statement was not that 70% of teenagers are doing. It was that BY age 19, 70% have done it.
^shakes head^ That is my point. That's a shtty and confusing way to formulate a statistic. "70% of teenagers" is too broad and misleading.

Round and round we go.

There really is nothing confusing about that. Again, YOU are the only one unable to correctly interpret a statement.

I am the only one SMART enough to question 70% of teenagers are sexually active. That is simply not true. We're mincing words and statistics and I'm the only one who called that out. The statement could be interpreted a number of ways. I seem to be the only one capable of looking at it from another perspective.

Definition of Statistics: The science of producing unreliable facts from reliable figures.

Definition of a Statistician: A man who believes figures don't lie, but admits that under analysis some of them won't stand up either.

I can prove anything by statistics except the truth....

You have a point. There were several ways to construe "teenagers".
However, you should know by now that if you want a comment to be regarded seriously you need to be very careful about how YOU present it otherwise you will be jumped on.
That is what happened here

How has anyone jumped on him? The statistic made claim A. Everyone but edog read it and undetstood it as intended. Somehow, edog read it as claim B and has been arguing against claim B all day long and in fact agrees with claim A. And all day long everyone else has repeatedly pointed out that no one ever made claim B except him. How you could interpret that as everyone jumping on him is beyond me. As day long arguments with the dog go, this one has been one devoid of any name calling and relatively tame.

And WHERE was that statement made? The quote from Amy's response is:

"According to the Guttmacher Institute, 7 of 10 American teens have had intercourse by age 19 and a sexually-active teenager who doesn't use a contraceptive has a 90 percent chance of becoming pregnant within a year."

You didn't even pounce on any poster who inadequately summarized that. You pounced directly on the response.

What Amy said, is correct. 7 of 10 American teens have had intercourse by age 19.

No, he doesn't have a point. If I say 100% of people die by the age of 150, there's no point to the counter argument that 100% of people are not dead, because that's not what the statement means.

Dog fills a role here. He is the whipping boy. Sloppy statememts made by someone else would be argued without personal attack. The group attacks not only what he says but him personally.

Sometimes I listen for what is meant and inartfully put, as opposed to literally said. Dog says more of that is inartfully put than the rest of you but by and large whatever he says is dissed first and parsed later.

He adds to it and probably colludes in it and plays his role, but he is not always wrong, just wrong headed and there is a difference.

I see that if you say "teenager" it describes 13-20 year olds. To say a percentage of teenagers have sex , technically covers the whole decade even if the statement wants you to look only at teh last yaer, i.e. by age 19.
Is he deliberately misinterpreting? Possibly. But if he is not, the way he argues is subject to an "innocent construction" an sometimes I get irriatted that no one else grants him that.

Yeah more 19 year olds are screwing that 13 year olds.

Happy?

Out of my 3, one did (before the fact.) BTW, that one's mid-20s now and no pregnancies.

BTW, my attitude is that I can't give or withhold "permission" to have sex -- permission is not mine to give. If you think you need permission, you're probably not ready.

Are you having the same failure to interpret the difference between "having" and "have had...by"?

It was pointed out early, by multiple posters that he misconstrued what the statistic stated. He could easily have looked at it again and said, "Oh, I misunderstood. It was unclear to me at first, but now I see what they are saying". Most of us have done that on more than one occassion. Not the dog. He kept arguing a point that no one made. He dug his heels in with his own misinterpretation. Sorry. That's not on anyone but him.

Y'all are just jealous I caught such a glaring error you all missed. Now you're trying to justify your own short-sightedness by saying *I* misinterpreted the data. Don't be such haters. Bask in my sunlight of knowledge, don't sulk in my shadow with growing resentment.

Having= currently doing it
Have had by= did it once ( or briefly a while ago, etc), but am not doing it now
I assume that most teenagers, of whatever age ,are having sex in the context of an established relationship and not as part of one night stands. Using that assumption, most kids don't do it just one
and then stop until age 20. Under those circumstances, "having" sex does equate to "have had" sex.

I didn't read the Guttmacher study but I would be surprised if it was based on whether teh respondents were in a current relationship

P, I can understand edog misunderstanding, because he's edog, but their is nothing ambiguous about 7/10 American teens have had intercourse by the age of 19. It simply means that by the age of 19, 7/10 folks have had sex at some point in their life.

You've inserted an assumption that is not at all supported by the statement.

By your logic, if I say that by age 19 most teens have driven a car, your assumption then means that they did it once ( or briefly a while ago, etc), but are not doing it now. That statement makes no claim on frequency. That statement lumps everyone together. The kids that are out doing it every weekend and the kids that did it one time and haven't done it again. The words are very clear and you and dog are trying to muddy them.
