Lw3: i think half of you peeps got lw3 wrong. She's not complaining about mil leaving her in the lurch. This is not an issue of her not being able to take care of her kids or being able to afford a babysitter. Her issue is thst when mil is unable to watch the kids, she takes it upon herself to find a reolacement. One that lw would rather not watch the kids. It does not read to me like she is incapable of finding a suitable replacement for mil. Her issue seems to be that mil does not even give her the opportunity. She just substitutes bil for herself at the last minute. Lw even appeciates the gesture. Just not the choice of replacement.

Then it's a communication issue. If granny has her bingo tourney that day, she needs to tell the lw she's not available and should make other arrangements. The fact one person is entrusted to the kids, then passes them on to someone else, regardless of whether they're capable or not, is the bigger problem IMO

I agree. My parents always tell me ahead of time when they have an appointment and can't take my child after school. They always feel bad and offer to pay for her after school care that day. Of course, I don't let them do that because that would be ridiculous. It's MY responsibility, not theirs. I am LUCKY that they can take her when they do!

Glance into the future on LW3:

To take care of those kids, she:
(a) enrolled them in age appropriate activities when they were old enough
(b) traded yard work for child supervision with someone she trusted
(c) arranged play date rotations with a mother she trusted
(d) hired her oldest child to watch the others for slowly increasing increments of time when that child turned twelve or thirteen.
or
(e) other
