Coal is used to generate more than 40% of America's energy needs, more than any other energy source. Almost twice as much energy is produced by coal than by natural gas and 10 times more than solar and wind power.

The Obama administration is working to raise the price of coal energy, harming consumers, producers and the entire economy.

And almost 100% of the pollution and workplace hazards.

And it used to be that almost all lighting was by whale oil. I don't regret changing to kerosene and I doubt if I will regret the end or a diminished role for coal. Wind and solar are adding capacity far faster than any OTHER option because they are needed and competitive.

Coal is its OWN worst enemy. Obama, and the industry is just reacting to the damage it does and looking for better options.

http://tinyurl.com/lbyzxys

Even exports of coal are causing big problems out West with competition for scarce water and pollution of ground water supplies.

Nonsense, falls and slips are the number one workplace hazard; just wait to see LessHy's scheme to mitigate gravity and inertia. Coal power production has never been cleaner and low sulfur coal from the Powder River Basin is making coal power production cheaper and cleaner. It's Obama's raising energy prices with new regulations on new coal plants and plant renovations.

We've seen and caused species extinction events many times in the past, but never run out of any mineral resource. We use coal to produce most of our electricity, don't be a hater.

Because of government policy, taxpayer guaranteed loans, subsidies, tax incentive and green marketing, not need or competition. Everywhere consumers get to choose, green energy loses. That's why the left wants the government involved in your decisions about energy, transportation, habitation and fuel production and use.

Let the people decide, get government out of the energy business. We need and energy policy that encourages the production and use of energy and fuel. Conservation is for losers and the poor, not growing economies and America.

Obama is coal's worst enemy, he is harming consumers, producers and the entire economy in his mad drive to mitigate catastrophic climate change.

Let the people alone, let them decide about energy and fuel without government regulations, fees, taxes and burdens. Let freedom rule the climate, not government law.

Water is always limited but LessHy has no limit on redundancy. Let coal power wells, pumps and canal locks so everyone can enjoy more clean water. Our biggest problems are caused by environmentalists who object to growth, productivity and population.

Pat is right, Obama is winning his war on coal:

"Power generation from coal is falling quickly. According to new figures from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, coal made up 36 percent of U.S. electricity in the first quarter of 2012 — down from 44.6 percent in the first quarter of 2011...."

From Pat's citation above. They blame natural gas, I blame Obama's campaign promise to bankrupt coal producers.

My conclusion, Obama is fulfilling his campaign promise about bankrupting coal energy producers. Where do we differ?

Obama was lying when he said "If you like your health care plan you can keep it" but telling the truth when he said:“If somebody wants to build a coal-fired power plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them,” Obama said, responding to a question about his cap-and-trade plan. He later added,“Under my plan … electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.”

One question: Has President Obama's cap and trade plan been implemented?
The article pointed out that the cheaper natural gas has been the greatest factor causing the diminishment of coal fired generating capacity.

Question number two: Is it important to reduce the pollution from our energy systems? There will be a price. But will it be greater than the price we pay if we do not?

I wonder sometimes if republicunts are calling a mistake a lie, and anybody can make a mistake, even the President of the United States. Just look at George W. Bush; he made a career of mistakes, mistakes were his hallmark.

Factory output up. Jobs numbers up. Housing starts up.

Thanks a lot, Obama!

The deficit is down. And food stamps are up because that's what you get when you can't find a job in a economy engineered to keep people down. BTW, growth is at 4%. OBAMA'S WRECKING THE ECONOMY! OBAMA'S WRECKING THE ECONOMY!

So, you want to compare the lie of the year, "If you like your health care plan you can keep it." with the intelligence warning, Iraq had WMD? You think claiming Obama is just as big a liar as Bush is a good plan?
So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted.

That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.

The only thing I've said with respect to coal, I haven't been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a (sic) ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.

It's just that it will bankrupt them."

You need to read better. Brian said "energy", which is not exclusively "electricity production".

"Currently almost 70% of global steel is produced in Basic Oxygen Furnaces (BOF). Coking coal is converted to coke, which is then used in the blast furnace to smelt iron ore. The resulting molten iron is then taken to the BOF, where steel scrap and limestone are added. A stream of high purity oxygen is blown through the molten bath to remove impurities, leaving almost pure liquid steel."

http://www.worldcoal.org/resources/coal-stati...

And according to Wikipedia, coal is also used for industrial heating.

Once again... warmists ignore the 'inconvenient truth' and cherry-pick their data.

Good question.

By their oft used, "But what about Bush..." retorts they are unwittingly saying Obama is no better than Bush.

And they hate Bush.
