Filthy American government scum could sell it for surplus but they just want to stop the public from having ammo anyway they can. I hope that Russia and China attack America together.
Weapons for mass destruction: Pentagon will destroy more than $1 BILLION of excess ammunition as report reveals staggering 'waste'
The small-arms ammunition and missiles could still be usable
Defense Department's inventory systems can not share data effectively
Army, Navy and Air Force can not even share numbers about their stocks

This story is only partially true. Yes, some old ammunition will be discarded. Much of it is for weapons that have been withdrawn from service, for example .30-06 rounds for .30 MGs. Some of the other is very old - stored since the Vietnam era - and has the same problems that caused many early M-16s to jam in Vietnam. There is even some old .45 ACP in storage for M1911 pistols. Those haven't been issued in over 20 years.

I have purchased very old surplus ammo and found it to be dependable. The primers and set in tight and on military ammo are crimped and then coated with varnish to keep it waterproof. I suspect that all this ammo will work very well.

Yes. Military ammo will last a long time in storage and still fire.
BUT if the weapons that fired it are no longer in the U.S. inventory - and most of the weapons that fired this stuff were retired years and sometimes decades ago - then it is not usable. It is simply taking up space in the storage facilities. Better to discard it.
The defective Vietnam era 5.56 for M-16s will still fire, but, in a combat situation in which weapons are fired clip after clip and there is no time for cleaning, it would cause the same problems that it caused in Vietnam. Soldiers would find themselves with a jammed, inoperable rifle, just like they did in Vietnam. Keeping this stuff in stock is a positive danger to U.S. soldiers because its very existence can be used by penny pinching politicians to not buy a stock of new, reliable ammunition. Then, in an emergency, it would be issued -- with the results that I just mentioned.
There is also a big stock of old man portable surface to air missiles - Redeyes - in stock that would still shoot. But the launchers are no longer issued and the missiles are inadequate for use against modern jets. That stuff too needs to be destroyed. Same for some old shells for tank guns. They would fire just fine but modern tanks have a different caliber gun and, in cases where it will still work, the shells won't penetrate the armor of a modern enemy tank. Again, destroy the stuff. Navy still has some 5 inch shells for guns that are no longer installed on U.S. ships. Again, wasted storage space.

I would like the redeyes please. I could use them to shoot down drones and the sheriff's new armored tank.

An old Redeye might shoot down a small, low flying tactical drone, but it would be useless against most of them. They fly too high, much higher than the missile can go. That is why they are useless in combat.
As for using one against the "sheriff's new armored tank" all that would do is make a scratch in the paint and piss off the sheriff.

I just can't seem to win and have no money for advanced weapons. I think that is the governments idea.
