Republicans may say, for the sake of votes, that they are on the side of labor, but history proves this to be a total fallacy.

They are for union busting - from Reagan to the most recent past, with Walker and virtually every other republican governor siding with "right to work" laws, they will never win any labor votes.

F.D.R. Warned Us

September 16, 2011,

“It is impossible to bargain collectively with the government.”

That wasn’t Newt Gingrich, or Ron Paul, or Ronald Reagan talking. That was George Meany -- the former president of the A.F.L.-C.I.O -- in 1955. Government unions are unremarkable today, but the labor movement once thought the idea absurd.

The founders of the labor movement viewed unions as a vehicle to get workers more of the profits they help create. Government workers, however, don’t generate profits. They merely negotiate for more tax money. When government unions strike, they strike against taxpayers. F.D.R. considered this “unthinkable and intolerable.”

Government collective bargaining means voters do not have the final say on public policy. Instead their elected representatives must negotiate spending and policy decisions with unions. That is not exactly democratic – a fact that unions once recognized.

George Meany was not alone. Up through the 1950s, unions widely agreed that collective bargaining had no place in government. But starting with Wisconsin in 1959, states began to allow collective bargaining in government. The influx of dues and members quickly changed the union movement’s tune, and collective bargaining in government is now widespread. As a result unions can now insist on laws that serve their interests – at the expense of the common good.

1) Union contracts make it next to impossible to reward excellent teachers or fire failing ones.

2) Union contracts give government employees gold-plated benefits – at the cost of higher taxes and less spending on other priorities.

3) The alternative to Walker's budget was kicking 200,000 children off Medicaid.

No Wonder the Wise Man Walker Chose the Tax Payers over the Filthy Union Bastards trying to strangle the State!

Voters’ elected representatives should decide how the government spends their taxes.

More states should heed the A.F.L.-C.I.O. Executive Council’s 1959 advice:
“In terms of accepted collective bargaining procedures, government workers have no right beyond the authority to petition Congress — a right available to every citizen.”

Daily Kos: What's the Deal with FDR and Public Unions?

by xaxnar
Wed Feb 16, 2011

This is going to be a quick diary - mainly because I don't have time to get answers; I just have the question. Yesterday I got in a 'discussion' with a devout anti-government, anti-union retired teacher. He came flat out and said FDR was against government worker unions.

I did a quick Google search on "FDR on public unions" and found a whole bunch of recent listings all of which the headers claim FDR was against them. The Wall Street Journal appears in a lot of them too, along with the usual suspects.

Is this the latest talking point the tea party? Is this the latest gambit in the war to destroy government and the people who work for it? Has anyone got the real story on FDR on this? Please put up a comment if you've got anything on this. I'm too stupid a Democrat to research it myself. I need others to think the put words in my mouht. You know. That's what being a Dem is ALL About!

I have to run time to pick up my Snap FS - back later today. Thanks!

The Trouble with Public Sector Unions

DANIEL DISALVO

When Chris Christie became New Jersey's governor in January, he wasted no time in identifying the chief perpetrators of his state's fiscal catastrophe. Facing a nearly $11 billion budget gap — as well as voters fed up with the sky-high taxes imposed on them to finance the state government's profligacy — Christie moved swiftly to take on the unions representing New Jersey's roughly 400,000 public employees.

On his first day in office, the governor signed an executive order preventing state-workers' unions from making political contributions — subjecting them to the same limits that had long applied to corporations.

That BUSTED their Azz!

More recently, he has waged a protracted battle against state teachers' unions, which are seeking pay increases and free lifetime health care for their members. Recognizing the burden that such benefits would place on New Jersey's long-term finances, Christie has sought instead to impose a one-year wage freeze, to change pension rules to limit future benefits, and to require that teachers contribute a tiny fraction of their salaries to cover the costs of their health insurance — measures that, for private-sector workers, would be Normal.

Now, under Christie's wisdom, the state is coming back to life while Obama's leftist idealism is strangling the air out of America.

GOVERNING IN THE REAL WORLD

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Giddy in Charlotte as Strike Nears

Friday, September 7, 2012

Chicago Rahm Emanuel first was reported as cutting his visit in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the Democratic National Convention. He was to be there just the first night, and then was to race back to Chicago, as both powerful local politicians were asking for him to return to Chicago. Yet he stayed at least one more day.

From Mike Klonsky's report: "Rahm giddy in Charlotte as strike nears"

As the strike deadline draws near, I'm taken with image of Rahm Emanuel, last night, still in Charlotte, giggling like a little boy in front of the TV cameras and clapping wildly as his patron Clinton lectures the eager crowd.. For a moment I thought he was going to pee himself.

Meanwhile back home, the CTU was not impressed. The union upped the ante yesterday, filing a charge with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board accusing CPS, among other things, of unfairly denying CTU members “step” increases for additional years of experience. CTU officials contended the board must honor the step increases in the current contract until a new contract replaces it.

In response to the charges and feeling the stress of mounting public pressure and possible damage to the Obama campaign, CPS made a concession. While they refused to move off of their measly 2% pay increase offer, the board did move away from its "merit pay" demand -- a major concession. Previously, CPS had proposed that CTU members would get a tiny fourth-year raise only if they had agreed to a “differentiated compensation plan’’ that year.

Rahm "Deadfish" Emanuel: UNION BUSTER!!!!

Longer school day a bust, teachers union leader says just show me the money

by News
August 22, 2012

By Rosalind Rossi, Chicago Sun-Times

Chicago Teachers Union officials Wednesday charged that nine months of contract negotiations have only produced “very limited progress’’ and so far, Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s longer school day is not a better school day.

An 11th-hour longer school day that began in the one third of the system’s schools last week with year-round calendars has been implemented “haphazardly” and “ridiculously,’’ CTU President Karen Lewis said Wednesday at a news conference.

“It is not a better school day yet and if we just leave it up to these guys, it will never be a better school day,’’ Lewis charged shortly before CPS officials gathered for the Chicago School Board’s monthly meeting.

U.S. Jobless Rate Drops for the Worst of All Reasons

By Peter Coy
September 07, 2012

The U.S. economy added just 96,000 jobs in August, falling short of expectations and showing that with a presidential election just two months away, the nation still has a long ways to go to heal from the deep 2007-09 recession. The unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent, but that was only because 368,000 people left the labor force.

Like Bill Clinton said, It's just arithmetic:

$1,000,000 in offshore accounts.

divided by a $50,000 middle class income

= 20 jobs NOT being created by the "job creators".

Which mean 20 less people spending so companies aren't earning money to hire more people.

And the Republicans RINOs are whining to the government for jobs?

Working with anti-working class politicians like Rahm Emanuel, groups and individuals strive to privatize public education, union bust, and profit off the sufferings of the poor.

Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) is on the front lines of the battle to line their own pockets, but they are fighting right-wing forces representing the tax payers.

Their bold actions in the face of overwhelming odds may well be the turning point in the battle to prevent the neoliberal project from eliminating public education nationwide. They need our support, please contribute to the CTU Stupidity Fund.
