Ignore the jerks here.

Great small towns: In the mountains, Spruce Pine, Burnsville, Black Mountain, Sylva, Sparta, West Jefferson.

Piedmont (central): Apex, Saxapahaw, Pilot Mountain, Troy, Asheboro, Mount Airy, Denver,

Coastal: Washington (best choice), Beaufort, Snead's Ferry, Edenton, Elizabeth City, Manteo (if you're rich), Bath, Belhaven.

You can go to city data website by googling them and finding out things like climate, crime rates, real estate trends etc.

A good website to surf real estate is www.realtor.com .

Good luck to you and remember that the jerks here who were so rude to you are not typical of North Carolinians.

Look for a community withg a higher number of single-income households. Stay-at-home mothers are soi important for young school-aged children. Those duel income homes have drug problems in their schools with no parents to remediate the matter.

Those kids need supervision. They need rides to and from afer school activities. They need your attention.

So, I would avoid areas like Balentyne, Marvin, and Weddington. But, I would consider towns like Indian Trail, Waxhaw, etc... If you require two incomes to maintain your home, please consider a downgrade.

My wife and son and me are also thinking of the Carolina's .we're simple country folks from east Kentucky practically neighbors with true southern roots .
I live on the south side of lake Cumberland near mill springs . But something is wrong here!family members are turning against one another .i dream of a place east of here with a little country store that is the center of the community .where people gather to swap stories of the past and where neighbors still buck hay for a friend for the winter when they need help.are these days gone for ever or is there still such a place where true southern values still exist ?i am in search of such a place where children can play without fear of who might be roaming the streets.where a mans word is still as good as a handshake.

We are looking for a smaller town ( less than 10,000 people) with friendly folks.
Any suggestions?

I'm just tellin you like it is. Many of us feel this way. We may not be rude and nasty like yall are to people's faces, but we really don't want any more yankees. So basically, I may smile at your face, but as soon as you open your mouth with your thick accent I'll lose interest in what your saying. You yanks just don't know how to be easy goin sweet people. Always in a rush, always gotta go go go. If you dress nice and are nice looking then you may be an exception, cause the yankees I've met down here and up there have been plain old ugly.
Message, from Betsy ann of Bayport, N.Y., Hello, I'm from Long Island, N.Y. and i love diversity of people, from all over. There are good and bad and somewhere in-between people ,from all over, in each state, so to characterize everyone together is plain and simply, wrong. We all have one shot of this ride, called life, and if people choose to try to find a new place to live, to see and experience a new area before we get to an age where that is not possible we should be able to enjoy doing so. None of us really own any of our areas, we are just guests where ever we go, so lighten up on your aggressive feelings abit, and remember, we are on a land called, "the united states of america". May God Bless America, the world, and it's guests, the human race.

I grew up in NY but moved to the South 30 years ago. My Mother was from Greensboro so I spent a lot of time in NC over the years.

The reason people in the South don't like Yankees is because of the stereotype that Yankees promote about the South and it's people.

I witnessed more racism in the North than I ever have in the South. The people of the South are friendly, hard working folks who treat people as they want to be treated.

The problem with people who live up North or on either coast is that they think their way of life is the only way and anyone who has different values are inferior.

So if a Southerner treats a Yankee like they are a stuck up snob you can believe it was well earned, if not by you personally, by your Yankee brethren.

Wow. I would like to formally apologize for said idiots above. I was born and raised in NC, and because I love it down here I have decided to stay. I strongly suggest the Stanly County area. Oakboro, Stanfield, Richfield, Missinhimer. Small towns under 5,000 in population but close enough to albemarle that you still can go out to eat if you would like and they have a wal-mart and tractor supply for your shopping needs. It's a little over an hour from Charlotte.

I moved down here from NYC, and it is not too bad. I love small towns. There are some things I do not like, but they are my issues to deal with. You should visit the big cities too. DC, Philly, NYC, Boston, etc...

I appreciate your sincerity...

I had no idea uneducated pigs still exist in this country, in this day and age (referring to comments by "Stay There" and "Oh No You Not" (Nice understanding of the language there!)...One should just ignore this kind of negativity and ignorance, it is weak, and probably represents about 1% of the population, the ones missing chromosomes and/or education and dignity. They can/should go to hell and be done with it.
I realize this comment comes years after the conversation, but stupidity is timeless!
I'm sure NC is full of awesome people so anyone reading those comments just ignore that trash.
So stupid.

...I might suggest NOT moving to the areas occupied by "Stay There" and "Oh No You Not" [sic]-(obviously not very educated)- as the ether could quite possibly be contaminated by their poisonous miasma, OR, perhaps, DO move to their town so that the dark side is outnumbered by your good energy!
Unbelievable. They should be shot and put out of their self-inflicted misery.

We pretty much agree it's you. That's why you don't get invited to the monthly Topix get togethers and line dances.

Timmy_, is your argument that blacks fought side by side with their white brothers to fight for their right to remain slaves?
