BELMONT The 6 ½ acres near thriving downtown Belmont appealed to developer John Church even though an old textile plant cluttered the property.

If Mr. Church saves and restores the old mill portion, it will do a lot to soothe aching hearts that continually lament the loss of our wonderful town. Heartless, greedy, and mean people have come to Belmont simply to make a party town and see how much money they can make while disparaging and disrespecting the good hard working people who built it and were raised here. Anything anyone can do to soothe the hurt will be appreciated. It's sad to watch your town morph into something bad. Belmont has become crowded, noisy, littered, crime ridden, beer infested and mean.

Sounds great. Hopefully they can put in some place to party there. Maybe a microbrewery.

We just lost that old mill last year behind the coffee shop. Wouldn't it be nice to hold onto a little heritage even if it's condos or apartments. I applaud the developer for being open minded about saving it.

I'm a candidate for City Council and speak with John frequently. I would like to know what you think should go into the Chronicle Mill.

You are the guy on the planning board that voted to change the zoning laws from residential to commercial downtown Belmont. Maybe that jewelry store could go there.

Voter: They certainly could. My vote was in preserving the historic house and had nothing to do with the Jewelry store. In fact, we can't take the business into consideration while voting. I would be happy to discuss how I came to my conclusion and would suggest we probably have very similar views on Main Street in Belmont.

Your view is obviously to allow rezoning historic downtown homes to businesses based on your vote. Can you guess how I will vote in November based on that fact?

I think they should put in a rec center/skate park/trampoline park or something like that for the kids to go.
