Slaying of Kenyadda Patterson: 2nd-time killer gets 46 years in prison

There are 18 comments on the Charlotte.com story from Sep 14, 2007, titled Slaying of Kenyadda Patterson: 2nd-time killer gets 46 years in prison. In it, Charlotte.com reports that:

“He leaves a string of misery and agony in his wake.”

Derrick Leon Harris was sentenced Thursday to at least 46 years in prison for the 2005 murder and sexual assault of a 31-year-old single mother.

It's the second time in 20 years that Harris has been imprisoned for murder in connection with the slaying of a woman.

Before sentencing Harris, Superior Court Judge Jesse Caldwell called it 'shocking' and 'appalling' that the 45-year- old Charlottean had served only five years in prison -- less than half his sentence -- for a 1987 murder.

'It's every parent's nightmare to lose a child -- particularly one who has been abused and murdered,' Caldwell said. Read more

Too bad he didn't get the electric chair instead of 46 years.

5 years for murder? I guess he will be out to kill again in 2012. Mark your calendars! The NO justice system in our country is absolutely abhorrent.

This animal, Harris, deserved the death penalty --not saving the county money by once again being allowed the opportunity to plead guilty, just as he did when he murdered my sister, Jennifer Haney, age 23 when he killed her with his bare hands, coldly discarding her naked body behind a school, and leaving a five year old boy motherless, and our family so devastated, we have never recovered. When does Jennifer and Kenyadda receive justice? Our families will never be able to be fully at peace as long as Derrick Leon Harris is allowed the one thing he took from two young women - life. SHAME ON NORTH CAROLINA. Maybe this time, at least he won't be allowed out on work release (FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR THEY SAID) in Charlotte -- doing roofing on houses, after only serving two years - which is what he was allowed after her killed my sister. Justice is dead, or so it would appear.

Thank you for your kind thoughts. He murdered my sister Jennifer, was headed to trial for the death penalty, but after deadline, he was allowed to please guilty, received 14 years, got out on work release after serving 2 years, and was released in 5 years. He was then able to work at a health facility, and also, from what I was told, received taxpayer money to take care of his brother. Derrick Leon Harris's family sat in court and made fun of Amy (nickname), laughed in my mom's grieving face, and at this point I must stop writing... I cannot believe he once again got out of going to trial, receiving a paltry 46 years for killing a 2nd young woman -- that we know of! Sadly, I was not even given notice or the opportunity to be in court when sentence was given this time. By the way, first time around, we, Jennifer's (Amy) family, were forced to leave Charlotte after he was sentenced for my sisters murder - we were treated more like the criminal. God help North Carolina if this is what you have to live with.

I feel awful for both families that lost loved ones due to this creature. My only hope is that he is R*aped over and over in prison and dies a painful convulsive death.

I have read all of what you say about my father. I am also disappointed in his actions. He has always thought his two sons how to be men not to kill women. I do appologize for my father and i don't think that my family would sit in the faces of the young girls family and laugh. i am the oldest of the two childern and also live with his name as mine. i hurt not having my father around. The first time he was sentenced i cryed to sleep everynight as a young boy. in this world we all hurt.

Hey neighbor. I'm sorry to hear about your. NC does have a crazy system in place...people are definitely sleeping at work. Unfortunately, it seems like that is the case everywhere. Everytime I watch the news in Charlotte an illegal is brought up. Nothing gets done with all the illegals, and for some reason they are more concerned with speeding (I wish they would drive fast). Maybe people need to put a greater emphasis on the people who are letting these criminals out. The sad thing is that criminals are born everyday, you just never know when something will happen to you or a loved one. Be cautious, observant and know your surroundings. I know in Media and West Chester life is good but you just never know....God Bless.

This horrible monster man killed Kenyadda Marie Patterson in North Carolina. A sister to me not by blood but by spirit. A true friend and a inspiration to me. I have a hurt so deep and a anger still so raw it's so unbearable. To know Kenny, was to know an angel. She was so beautiful, kind, and loving. A wonderful mother with two beautiful children. A hard worker - a nursing student. I still miss her so much.......it hurts like no other pain I have ever felt. This killer may have taken her life but he has NOT taken away the love my family and I have for her in our hearts. We love you Kenny!

I know this gentleman and when I heard of this I was stunned. He is a product of a system that is so LAYED back that we are all subject to being killed by smooth talking ex-convicts that didnt serve their time. It sickens me that he was able to get "PAST THE SYSTEM". Not only the judicial system, but also the system that does the background checks on people. We can only watch ourselves and family and friends and never assume that a kind face has a kind heart. I know Mr. Harris will suffer for his crimes, it is not our place to judge him, the Lord will make him pay dearly for killing two of his children!

Just checking to see if murderer Derrick Leon Harris is STILL in prison. To the family of his latest victim (that we know of), I think of you regularly & pray that you find solice. After he did the same to my sister (Jennifer "Amy") in 1987, should never have been freed to do a repeat heinous crime as he did with your very special daughter, mother, sister(?). I also wish the very best for her children, as I know my nephew's life has been so hard, mentally & physically because of "him". You are not forgotten, & I sincerely pray that you find peace. In order for me to continue living & not allowing the "animal Derrick" to have any power over me, I've had to forgive, which has been near impossible-BUT, I'll never forget. This I say in closing - please make sure you are given notice by the "system" if there's ever a change in his status(again, 2 years after he killed my sister, he was in Charlotte working on residences on that "wonderful NC work release program". Wonder if Charlotte is aware of just who is surrounding them. My sincerest compassion for your loss - you'll never be forgotten and I do pray for you to find peace, as our lives are forever changed & to this day, I still don't know why he did it. But after this note, I'll put my thoughts away, but will never forget. My sincerest regards,

Yadda was one of my dearest most cherished friends while she walked this earth. It shattered my life the day I found out what had been done to her and how she was found. I struggle daily to live with the grief left behind. Yet at the same time I also struggle with trying to forgive the man that took such a bright light from our lives. Thankfully, I know she is in a much better place now, free from all monsters that roam free...or sitting pretty in prison.

Is this guy Derrick L Harris roaming the street as of 9-24-12 or is he still behind bars, where he should be. Do you know which prison and for how long. May God be with the families broken by this man's disregard for human life.

i had the pleasure of taking care of kenyaddas car , we did the transmission work to her car a couple moths before this happened. i have to say that kenyadda was a wonderful young lady. she was poised, well spoken and a very classy young lady and i admired her from the moment i met her. she worked with disabled children and was the nicest customer i ever met. my heart was saddened tremendously when i heard she had been brutally murdered by a man who had been released from prison for the exact same offense . this woman had a career and children and loved her life for it to unjustly be taken from her by a crazed maniac for no reason. this was a terrible loss to society, her family , friends and all that knew her. she did not deserve to be hurt and left for dead by this parasite of society who has no regard for human life . he is a coward for attacking a sweet lady like her who apparently could not defend herself against anything this monster decided to do to her. i hope this family finds comfort in these words knowing that vengeance is mine says the lord, and if not now, mr. harris will face judgement and the lord will see that justice is done.i pray that every day in that prison is a living hell for him for what he done to this sweet lady, i know my life was blessed by meeting her.
sincerely, debbie ( transdrive of charlotte )

your father was an animal who had no regard for women, human life or his own child for that matter. he deserves to rot in prison for what he done to these girls for no reason ! i however have sympathy for you as you were cheated terribly by not having you father around as you were growing up , but thats his fault and you need not be ashamed of it, you didnt do it. just try not to be like your father in his apparent hatred and control of young women who could not defend themselves against him. hopefully you have grown up and will not follow in your fathers footsteps. he had no reason whatsoever but his own sick choice to hurt these girls.

Ma'am allow me to be the first to apologize.. See im not just a reader.. I am the niece in law to derrick leon harris.. My cousins are his first born sons.. We were small children at the time of your sister's death.. We had no clue.. I remember sitting in the back of the court room.. Nomore than 4 or so.. My grandmother never cared for him,but her daughter married him.. I remember the car being park behind a building.. I remember the way my aunt look when she found out.. He came home and was there like nothing happened.. He never did nothing for his children.. He beat my aunt awfully.. And he was weird.. But as a child how can u know.. My grandmother was afraid for my safety.. The shame.. Yes we too were surprised that his time was so short.. That he was living with a new wife.. Kids and picked up like nothing happened.. I haven't seen or heard from him since that court day.. Almost 30 yrs ago.. But the 2nd was a blow.. More so to my cousins.. As we sat bei g normal children.. Laughs.. Talking.. Across the screen his name.. He didn't just hurt your family.. Or the other lady's family.. But mine's too.. His children.. Had to once again let the world knw that they were fathered by a monster.. The look in their eyes.. Here you father was who young sons want to grow up to be.. But what if you father was this man.. To this day they've never recovered.. I don't knw what his family may have done.. But on this side.. Ma'am I truly apologize for the hurt and pain..sarrow..despair.. By no means what he has done to your 2 families is ok.. DEATH PENALTY.. Should have been imposed.. As children I don't knw what we could've done.. But if you ever read this.. PLEASE know that we too feel your lost and we will always forever reminded of the grief you feel.. So sorry..
