Canon SX210 IS Casts a Lens Shadow

Just wanted to give a warning to anyone considering purchasing the SX210 IS from Canon. This camera has a serious design flaw that will cause its flash to cast a shadow of its enormous lens barrel in your photo. The problem lies in the fact that the lens extends too far out, thus it is unable to be cleared by the flash.

If you are interested in seeing a live demonstration of this design flaw, check out this YouTube video:

Are you being serious? You’re taking pictures in macro mode about an inch away, at the most. No one in their right mind and/or with any photography knowledge would ever take a macro photo that close up and use a on camera flash. The flash will wash out the subject every time, so the flash shadow is the least of your problems.

Why, why would you need to take a photo of anything that close up in that wide of an angle? Here a little advice; zoom out, stand a few feet back, use the flash (if needed) and you will get almost the same perspective as you did super duper close up in wide angle, but without barrel shadow.

Use your brain, learn a little about photography, and stop bashing a camera because you're using it in ridiculous scenarios.

I own the camera and I the only way I could get the same results was to partially block the flash with my finger. It produced a little shadow and decreased flash output. That was the only way to get your type of results. So, I’m calling shenanigans on your photos at the end.

i would be more concerned about chromatic aberration/purple fringing, noise at base ISO, noise at any ISO, noise in any light condition, slow everything.

i almost never use flash when i shoot 3in/5cm macro and rarely use flash when longer distance than that. but i also never had 14x lens with a retarded pop-up flash. still lens shadow is not a deal breaker.

is Super fine replaced by Fine now? 14x zoom still usable? should i get a photoshop plugin to remove purple fringing from every image?

i want to try this cam when CHDK becomes available. it's slow 0.7 or more like 0.1 frames per second will be even slower with raw and bracketing enabled. what burst mode? LOL

i saw the custom grip for s90. sx210 needs two custom grips. when flash is needed not much room left to hold the cam on the left side.

on paper and on flickr at 1024x768 images look amazing.

Can anyone suggest me how to shut off the flash from opening up everytime I switch my camera on? Unintentionally, my finger is always on the flash and I might end up ruining it.
