It doesn't matter what the reason was for the call. A rule is a rule, whether you like it or not. He was purposely defiant and disrespectful.
We were just in the movie theater the other day and a woman in front of us refused to stop talking and text messaging during the movie. We have become a society of me-me-me self-importance, with total disregard for others.
More people need to be reminded about rules and manners.
Everytime I encounter someone being disrespectful in the movie theater, I have management throw them out. I don't pay $10/ticket to listen to someone else talk through a movie, and I have no tolerance for it. And manangement is always more than willing to kick the person out no questions asked.

Then why can't you use them in the ER? Or gas station (I don't even understand that one)?
Thnere has been many studies done on ERs....there are some very sensitive machines in hospitals that COULD be disrupted by cellphones (like the machines that read brain waves from outside the skull) Gas stations are BS. That has more to do with idiot people that get so engrossed in their phonecalls and drive off with the handle in the tank....even smoking at the pumps is overhyped. Was a fireman for years and we did demonstrations throwing a lit cig into bucket of gas...it goes out. If cig ignites paper as in the trash cans they put next to every pump..then you better run.

Well thats what I believed to be true re: the ER. So it isn't out of the realm of possibility that there is sensitive machinery on an airplane- and maybe it would be a wise idea that we listen to the PILOT (and I emphasize pilot because I believe that having been trained on the ins and outs of flying, they might know more about it than we do.)and turn our damn cell phones off for the 5 minutes it takes to take off and descend.

The FAA presently bans cell phone use on commercial flights airborne because the FCC asked them to. A modern cell phone operating at 0.1 watt output at 37,000 feet covers radio channels over multiple cell sites (read interferes)and sort of gums up the cellular networks.
Notice that you can use cell phones during the taxi in period, but not the taxi out? Guess it takes fewer navigational instruments to find the gate than it does to find the runway.
Years ago when over the shoulder analog cell phones put out about 3 watts, some of them did interfere with older aircraft navigation systems, usually the DME [distance measuring equipment]which operated at or near a harmonic of the 3 watt devices. The solution was to ban cell phones on commercial flights. The ban is still in effect today. The FAA and FCC move very slowly.
Today's digital cell phones are much less prone to cause harmful interference to modern aircraft navigation systems. Many commercial airliners no longer rely totally on DME with VOR {VHF omni-range) and have switched to GPS {global positioning system} or some sort of augmented IRS [inertial reference system].
I believe some companies are trying to put equipment on commercial aircraft which will allow cell phone usage, but at a hefty price. The airlines are always looking for another revenue stream.
Personally, I had one case where the captain forgot to shut off his NEXTEL style phone. After we got airborne, his side of the navigational suite on the aircraft failed. I asked him if his cell was still turned on. It was, he turned it off, and the system worked again. But, this is totally anecdotal, not scientific, information. I have forgotten to turn off my Verizon phone and nothing has ever occurred.
Do pilots get trained about cell phone use vis-a-vis aircraft system interference? I never have, and I work for a major airline. The rule simply says their use is restricted to the taxi in phase of the flight, provided you don't get out of your seat to use it. No other explanation has ever been provided to me by my company.
The bottom line is that it is a rule (with the authority of law). Whether it is a rule created for safety, security or business reasons is really immaterial.

My phone would not have been turned on in the first place because, unlike some others, I try to be considerate when using the cell phone when there are other people around.

And the point is.... he had his cell phone on... nothing happened during the flight. Case closed. There is no hard evidence showing that cell phones interfere with navigation.
Maybe all of us on the flight don't need to here some idiot talk about nothing while in flight...people keep f$#king up everything & everyplace...social graces and manors are less and less...all that has happened such as the mortgage crisis, gas prices, patriot act is because most people have brought this on ourselves with our bad behavior and our greedy, selfish, self consuming behavior...they should have through the person off the flight.

First off this is America, mabie you forgot that. As long as it doesn't pose a threat to the safety and lives of those on the plane or of those on the ground then there should be no problem with someone using their phone. If cell phones were that much of a hazard then they should of been banned from the planes just like everything else, and just because your talking on the phone doesn't meen you're being inconsiderate of others, mabie you should gain the guts to ask them if they could keep it down.

What can I say about cell phones, most people that use them are rude...the need to be banned from all public places...who needs to hear some idiotic conversation while eating out, in a park and on and on...just a bunch of no manored, rude idiots that need to be taught some social graces and basic manors...it is just more selfish behavior that needs a law or rule because most people don't have a clue about anyone but, themself and their selfish needs...and you all wonder why the country is in economic crisis...it is your behavior...it is not every other country or the government it is people & their greedy lifestyles...

BANNED! BANNED! ARE YOU SERIOUS! Come on now, how selfish of you is that! You're not in an economic crisis b/c of cell phones! Its the price of oil per barrel thats making a lot of people choose wether to pay the bills or be able to make it to work, or to send the kids to school or to even be able to go food shopping b/c a lot of people need their vehicle in order to get through the day. Thats why we're in an economic crisis! Not b/c people are using their cell phones. Open your eyes. I agree with "Cathy" if there was no threat then why get so forceful with the guy. If he was too loud then just ask him if he could keep it down, I've done it before a couple of times and I never had a problem yet.

The gas station requirement is also long gone. Hospitals claim that they do interfere with some of their equipment, but that is debatable. They simply do not have a strong enough signal.

You are taking quite a leap with the assumption that most people who use cell phones are rude, especially when considering your tone--how rude!
Yes, there are some people who carry conversations that are loud and disruptive. I particularly like the ones that continue to talk while conducting business, such as in retail. However, most people excuse theirself, walk away from a group and then resume their conversation. How is that rude?

You may not realize it, but you sound like a grumpy old man.

You're kidding, right? Did you not read my post above about the woman in the movie theater who refused to stop making calls during the movie?
And when is it ok to break rules, just because we don't like them or agree with them?
How does that make it right?
The sad fact is that MANY people (notice I didn't say ALL) are inconsiderate when using their cell phones and MANY do NOT walk away to use it somewhere discreetly (which the woman in the movie theater most certainly could have done).
People at work take their cell phones into the bathroom stalls, for crying out loud! It can't get much ruder than that.
While some people do try to be polite, I think that the greater number just don't care what others think - they only care about themselves. And it's not just cell phone use - it's parents talking during dance recitals and childrens' camp talent shows, butting in line, not saying "thank you" to a six year old who holds the door open for them, the list sadly goes on and on.
It seems that many people don't have good manners, so they're not teaching any to their children. It's a real shame.
(By the way, I think you ARE Cathy - nice try.)

That's just great - another person who thinks that the rules don't apply to her (or him).
People didn't have cell phones on planes in the 70's, yet I'm sure there were plenty of people taking flights to visit sick relatives.
Just because we have the technology now doesn't mean that we get to break rules.
I can't imagine that there wasn't another option for him - like using the plane's on-board phones.
Tell the stewardess that it's a medical emergency - ask for other options. But don't just disregard rules - that's the problem with our society today. No one thinks that rules should apply to them.
I completely empathize with him having a sick family member, but in all likelihood he was just a jerk who talked too loud and too long and bothered the other passengers sitting near him.
And no, that is NOT what I would have done. I would have given another relative's phone number to the doctor while I was on the flight. Again though, I would NOT have had my cell phone turned on in the plane in the first place.
It's called MANNERS, people.
Get some!
