LOL...that's when the parents complain because they sure as heck don't want them at home! This is an unpopular sentiment...I know a lot of us want to bash teachers....but they're paid to teach, and now you want them to play policeman/woman to some of these thugs? IMO....there are one or two teachers that will have a physical confrontation if they take some poor kids phone...as that is the most valuable thing to them in the world.

duh wrote: When teachers have tried to confiscate cell phones from students, often times the students will defy the request. The teacher writes up a discipline referral stating what transpired. The administrators code the referral as breaking the cell phone policy, giving a detention, but nothing is done about the defiance. When defying a teacher's request, a major consequence should occur. But that does not happen. This is why there is no longer discipline. Most teachers no longer "deal" with the cell phone, MP3, etc... issue. They are afraid of the confrontation and then lack of punishment Even when a student is disciplined with detention, the detention is not enforced most of the time and the students Know it, so they don't even show up for detention. It's a big joke.

Confiscating a cell phone for the year will do nothing because students will go steal another one or buy one off the street for next to nothing and then get 3 more strikes. Let me game begin!

Why not just find a way to block the signals in the schools? There are teachers who answer their cell phones during classes, too and that's very hipocritical. If the administration could turn on an electrican device of some sort that would block all signals, they could turn it off after the final bell, and the problem would be solved!

"Michael Dibilio, a Freedom High School assistant principal, said teachers do not get involved in enforcement. At Freedom, he said, teachers write a discipline referral and the student must take the phone to his office, where he keeps track of more than 400 offenses on a spreadsheet".
...why not?! after all you are a teacher. Heaven forbid you do anything. You are an authority figure, now act like one! This is the point where all you hear anymore is this,"they won't listen to their parents, why should they listen to me." That is such a bull@#$% excuse. Children want to learn, they want structure, even if they don't get at home. It's your job as a teacher.

BASD HOSTAGE

duh - cell phones, ipods, etc is a major issue at schools. if code of conduct is not working, then the teacher is wasting their time in trying to deal with it all day long. same goes for hats - on any day, you can walk around the high school and watch students walk right by hall monitors and teachers and nothing happens. Why not? It starts at the top. who is in charge and what are the rules and how are they enforced? i also agree about teachers on cell phones, but it all comes down to who you know in BASD.

Cell phones of students were a great asset for police in Columbine. They serve a legitimate purpose for personal security. Impliment a detention policy and that they must be on vibrate in class.
Confiscation of property will lose in court.

If the students are using their cell phones in class, then the teacher needs to take action. Personally, I think part of the problem is the people in charge of the teachers union for BASD. They get all up in arms when adminstration ask them to do something extra that isnt in their contract or the high school teachers would say that is the monitors job. Why cant this district work together?
