N.W.T. community grapples with elder attack

The brutal attack on a 91-year-old Behchoko elder in his home last Thursday may force the community to deal with its bigger social issues, Chief Leon Lafferty says.

The brutal attack that was done on a 91 year old elder should have woke the community up. Obviously, it has not woke the community up because everything is still the same. People are walking around drunk, tennager are getting into fight, young girls are getting rape, drugs are on the street, kids are burning building and the justice is suck. The leadership should do something becuase the town of Rae Edzo is not a good place visit. It's full of drunks and half of the town are number one bingo player. Their kids are left behind, the elder are left behind to care for their grandchild. I think this is sick and the community needs to wake up. What is wrong with the chief and our leadership. Maybe this town need a better person to replace the cheif and the leadership. We need someone who can represent the whole community, someone who has the education, skills and someone who can speak their mind.

You are very right! Things need to change! If you want to progress towards the futur and make it this world you have to evolve and focus on what you have to do to make the community better. Booze, drugs, abuse, gambling are just a few of the problems i have seen in Rae-Edzo. I dont think i will ever go back there.

I've lived in rae for as long as i know and this is year 2007 and the town is wotrst then ever 13 12 year olds drinking and getting into drugs and we can't do a thing about cuz the parent and leaders need to start doing something please please please leaders i love behchoko it was awsome growing up here but if it stays this was im going to retire my self as a tli-cho citizine cuz i don't want my kids growing up here and i just wanted to add that ever thing that tlicho citizen said is true and it well keep getting worst so please do something you stupide leaders i think u guys think only about the cash if thats the case go get a job at the mines or asomething leave this work to sum1 who lives in rae and knows what need to be done and u guys should make sum thing for the kids cus ui went for a drive just the other day and everwere kids standing around with sad faces and they have nothing to do so u guys should make something for the kids to do and from wat i heard the youth center sucks big time.
So as i go i leave you with a thought that my grand father left me with"keep ur coulture strong and ur spirt stronger" and if behchoko is still here when im done with school i promiss im going to do sum thing about this shitty town and RCMP acting like bad asses that a'nt right man i don't like cops in rae this is a small comunity instead of just picking up people like myself and throwing them in the cage like a fucking dog u should fucking help them out mybe take them home so they can sleep in there own bed in stead of fineing them fucking $800 bucks give them a wearning cuz this is a small town those cops should start serving and protecting and stop busting in doors and treating us like doggs yes dogs so until them cops stop that u guys a'nt getting no help from me ok im done thank u for reading masi cho
