N.S. poised to ban smoking in vehicles when children present

There are 9 comments on the The Canadian Press story from Dec 13, 2007, titled N.S. poised to ban smoking in vehicles when children present. In it, The Canadian Press reports that:

“Being a product of a family where both parents were smokers, and sitting in the back seat of a car and experiencing it, I support that wholeheartedly”

- Nova Scotia is poised to become the first province to ban smoking in vehicles when children are present.

The proposed ban is expected to get third reading in the provincial legislature Thursday, meaning it will only have to be proclaimed to become law. Bill 6 would make it illegal to smoke in a vehicle when anyone under the age of 18 is present.

Last month, the Nova Scotia town of Wolfville became the first municipality in Canada to ban smoking in vehicles carrying children.

The Wolfville bylaw goes into effect next June. Read more

Well thank God someone is looking out for the kids. My mother smoked while I was growing I used to break her cigarettes, I can't tell you how many times I was accidentally burned (atleast I think they were accidents =} jk), or coughed because she smoked.

You shouldn't have broke her cigarettes when they were lit. LOL

My mother smoked in the car when I was growing up. I am healthy, I can't recall the last time I was sick besides having the sniffles from this weird weather we had lately, of course I eat right too.

Unfortunately you are right, the problem is the majority of the non smokers don't see this. I wonder what is going to be next.

Just my opinion, but aren't there more important issues that our government needs to address?

So you think smoking around children should be legal? Explain how anyone would justify that theory.

A long long time ago, it was legal for men to rape and beat their wives..there were no laws against this - someone butted in and said its not right. then they decided children shouldn't be beaten either because someone butted in and said its not right...now they want to outlaw something that clearly harms children and you want to vote against that? why?

I think Carol may have some not to latent hatred for children. On another forum she talks about "genociding" non-smokers children , here she thinks smokers smoking around their children will cause not harm. I wonder if she just wants all children ill or killed.

have you noticed that the only parents that approve smoking around kids are smokers. i know there are the few exceptions, but for the most part, only smokers agree with smoking around kids and that is because it is toooooooo inconvienient for them to smoke some where else. sad.

The 'smoking around children' rhetoric is just a mean-spirited ruse to stop adults from being, well, adults. Smoking is still legal, yet it is the only government-controlled (and lucrative) activity for which no venues are provided. There are casinos, licensed premises, racetracks - and most addictive of all, halls of power - yet no facilities left to smoking adults. Now, not even their own. Pubs have become family restaurants - I'd rather a 'Happy Hour' than a 'Happy Meal', so the paranoia of parents who can't even leave their little darlings to a sitter for a few hours, suddenly now dictates everyone's environments. The one place that truly ought to be left to the free market - private entertainment - is somehow controlled through dictatorship fueled by hysteria. The worst outcome is not in the control in whether adults may smoke in their own cars with or without their own children- let the kids walk; it'd be good for them - but that adults are being bullied by oversized power-freak brats. Every element of these cascading smoking bans reveals the worst of the lords (and wannabe ladies) of the Flies. All it does is make way for a salivating underworld, which is already chuckling. Prohibition is not now, and never has, been effective. Quit sending the kids in to fight dirty battles!
