Opera shooting vs. The Cheer last summer

With all the coverage regarding the Opera shooting as it may or may not relate to the 2:30 a.m. police shift change, it begs a comparison to the situation last summer at The Cheer (now Jekyll & Hyde's) where I saw the most amount of police cars I had EVER seen in one place at one time, certainly at any bar.

One clarification: This was a night where the bars closed at 3:00 a.m. due to one of the festivals. I don't remember if I saw this scene just before 3:00 a.m. or just after, as I walked past the scene. I saw at least 9 or 10 police cars littered in front of The Cheer and on Stradbrook between Osborne and The Cheer's entrance. I saw no fight, no people, no cops, and the bar appeared to be closed. I think it might have been 2:50 a.m. but I can't remember any more. Everything was quiet and eerie. Unless the cops decided to all park their cars there and get on a school bus and go on a field trip or something.

Because if there was that serious an incident, maybe involving a gun or a fatal accident, that required that many cop cars, why was there nothing in the media about it in subsequent days? Yes, Marty Gold on City Circus says the media only goes by press releases, but why didn't the police issue a press release about this incident? If I knew there would be nothing in the media about this, I would have called the "news tip" lines myself. Have you ever heard of incidents involving something fatal where a press release is not issued and the incident does not make it into the papers?

So I will acknowledge that this was after 2:30 a.m., after the shift change, so it would have been easier to send more cars. But if it was THAT many, either it was a slow Friday and no cars were needed elsewhere, or they were taken away from other crime calls, who then may have experienced the same thing Opera experienced on this more recent night, or maybe some cars that were scheduled to go off the road at 2:30 a.m. stayed on the job for overtime to go to The Cheer.

Whatever the case, it sure would be interesting to compare what happened in front of Opera with whatever happened at The Cheer, if anybody ever knew.
