I heard a rumor about there being old underground tunnels in Winnipeg, mainly in the exchange area. Can any one confirm or deny that these tunnels exist. I also heard rumors that there is a pool located under the parking lot of the Albert hotel, that connects to these tunnels.
My friends and I really want to check these tunnels out and find out more about them. Please respond.

I've heard rumors of these as well.
However I have also heard rumors that these tunnels have all been sealed.
Mind you there are rumors that Down Osbourne the store that was once "The Crypt" had a a stairway going further down below it to where it's bathroom was, however the stairs take you to a room with three door. one of which contained another hallway.
Also the Bar that is now Mystique Nightclub apparently contained these tunnels as well.

I think each McDonalds has those magic tunnels too. One day I fell down the stairs and when I looked up the walls were all made out of chocolate and bubblegum. People never believe me =(

A coworker toured these tunnels a while back after a friend rented some buildings... they do exsist. One hotel room in the exchange went to their store (maybe the Saint Charles hotel?)

there is a series of tunnels that connect almost every building in the exchange district, as well as two railway stations, and the fort gary hotel. it is believed these tunnels were built in the early 1900's by the mob for the purpose of smuggling alcohol to various establishments in secret during it's prohibition. as far as i know, most tunnel enterances have been blocked off and nobody knwows about these tunnels.

I don't know if you can still get to them. but yes, there were tunnels under the Exchange sometime back. I've been down there.
Right beside the King's Head pub there is the old parking lot that used to be where they brought the Trolley cars in.....way back when. There was some construction inside the lot, a hole in the front left corner and a big gaping hole was there just waiting for someone to go down. We took our lighters out, crawled down and was amazed at what was down there. Benches, post with directions, old lanterns, walkways, stuff like that. There was one sign that stands out in my memory that said it leads to the Fort Garry Hotel. And that is pretty far from Old Market Square.
There are old tunnels. You just have to find them.

There were buildings that developed tunnels for their own use such as under the Hotel Fort Gary and the Health Sciences Centre. The tunnels there were used for years to move laundry, groceries etc etc around. A person who owned two buildings side by side may have dug their own tunnels. That way they could move stuff back and forth as well as avoid having to go "out" into winter to get things done.
A system of antique tunnels does not seem to surface anywhere not even in the annual open house tour of local historic buildings.
While Winnipeg had the notorious Bronfman family who were acquainted with Lucky Luciano etc and were into all kinds of questionable businesses etc we don't seem to be a Moose Jaw Saskatchewan. At least not on the surface.

I find it funny that no one has mentioned the search for these tunnels and where to really look. the amy st steamplant...who built it, who was the designer? take that name and then search the provincial archives....and perhaps the U of m archives, and special collections dept. You will be very surprised with what one may find with a little research....maybe there are even maps there...lol....check for yourself. And be sure to post the photos online for the rest of the world to see....another access point to tunnels.....Donald St masonic temple....anyone ever wonder why that building was stripped, and then abandoned? What did they find in there? something.

There's a closed off tunnel under The Chocolate Shop restaurant on Portage. I've seen it. It's pretty wide and in the shape of an arch. Part of the wall has a hole in it and you can see in a little with a flashlight. I didn't see anything interesting in it though. It was closed off using red bricks.

The Fort Garry Hotel was built as a Railway Hotel for the predecessor of the Canadian National Railways.Travellers arriving at the CN Station could take the underground tunnel running under Broadway Ave <----. connecting to the hotel by means of an electric car.

The Civic Centre and the Manitoba Centennial Centre were connected by underground tunnels in 1967.

They are there, likely unsafe and barricaded.

Are you referring to the downtown sewar system? Why on earth would you want to walk through those?

when i was a kid you could go through the tunnels from city hall to the manitoba museum, to winnipeg square. I think there was a tunnel to the hsc from city hall. They weren't dirt tunnels, they looked like normal hallways but with lots of pipes on the walls

It's not the sewer system, it's the old steam system.
I work for Manitoba Hydro and I've been in them. They are nothing special and thankfully, they were well built. They aren't crumbling apart like the rest of Winnipeg's streets...

The tunnels do exist, it is or at least should be common knowledge. Unfortunately The tunnels have never been fully discovered for the public. They stretch all throughout Winnipeg's downtown. Underneath the legislature, Exchange district, all underground the hospitals like the H.S.I. and I'd imagine up to The Grace Hospital. They got a whole city underneath our city and who knows for what. Considering here in Winnipeg they got THE most important and secretive medical research facilities in the world developing new super viruses year after year one could only imagine how deep these tunnels go, and how many levels there really are. Resident Evil doesn't seem so far out in our current day reality. If you could imagine it chances are it's already been invented and created. Holly Wood is a mirror of twisted Reality. A reality that isn't far from being untwisted.

Don't go nuts there fella. The old tunnel system is mostly gone now. Filled in with gravel and concrete. The only ones that are still useable are the ones that Manitoba Hydro uses on a regular basis. And anyone going down there without the required Protective equipment, won't last long. Don't get too excited for your "resident evil" fantasy. It won't happen here.
