It seems like everyone from manager, supervisor down to the front line lowly workers are all low intelligence with no grasp of concepts? I feel like I'm living in a big group home or mental hospital! I spent 3 years at University in Ontario and loved every minute of it. Life was fun, life was exciting, people were on the ball, everyone had some money. I moved back to Vic after University and was bored beyond recognition. It was like living on a zombie planet with a bunch of broke people. So it's no surprise that I moved to Oakville, Ontario, have a fantastic job and can afford to do fantastic things with my life. I will visit Victoria to see family, but it ends there, I don't want to ever live there again, and I don't even miss it.

Congratuations, you are a Victorian who managed to escape from the Vancouver Island prison. The other Victorians who don't have the resources to leave Victoria and Vancouver Island are really unhappy. Unfortunately, some piece of Victoria is still attached to you wherever you go.

Many others also say Greater Victoria is a good region to "VISIT"! It is like going on vacation to a broke ass 3rd world country for lots of fun times and then leaving to go back home to the rich 1st world. Most people probably need good paying jobs to live as they are not millionaires or billionaires. These rich people probably didn't get rich living and working in Victoria, that is for sure. Huge mobs of people couldn't even find enough low pay, dumpy jobs in Victoria, forget better pay jobs. Most of the people who could afford houses, condos, townhouses, nice cars, good life are the people from elsewhere who could make big money.

Your university, college education and training, past experience are all meaningless as corruption and nepotism is the key. Oh no, you are great, but we will find someone like you and give it to them. Meanwhile, owners and their managers, supervisors want to attract the best people for the worse pay and they wonder why the staff keep turning over and the cheap ones they do get are screw ups. The insane circus ride then repeats itself endlessly for every industry and sector.

The Vic culture is dumb down, dopey, and mental. That is why looking for a date, job, a place to live is so frustrating and difficult.

Dating:

You seem like the perfect one, everything I am looking. You amuse me, but oh no not you! I will find somebody that is exactly like you, maybe. Why can't I find what I'm looking for!? There is no one!

Employment:

You seem like the perfect one, everything I am looking. You amuse me, but oh no not you! I will find somebody that is exactly like you, maybe. Why can't I find what I'm looking for!? There is no one!

Social:

You seem like the perfect one, everything I am looking. You amuse me, but oh no not you! I will find somebody that is exactly like you, maybe. Why can't I find what I'm looking for!? There is no one!

It is because of this Victoria cultural trait that makes Victoria BC really lost and slow. It is like this in everything. Things that should take 3 seconds takes 3 minutes, 3 minutes takes 3 days, 3 days takes 3 months, 3 months takes 3 years, 3 years takes 30 years, etc. Merit and efficiency does not exist on Planet Victoria.

You nailed it right on target about Victoria's overall culture and how it negatively impacts on opportunities, prosperity, creativity, economics, labour, social, etc. The region occasionally does good things and get things right, but most of the time, that pesky cultural attitudes and world view gets in the way and poops on the party. Why do you think British Columbia is fast on its way to becoming a "have not province" whereas the former poor provincial cousin of Canada, Newfoundland, is on the way up to "have status"? There will be a place switch because BC is administered and ruled from a capital city like Victoria. They pander to anti prosperity forces, political parties and their allies like eco terrorists, and the soft bleeding heart socialists, lots of emotions but very little brains for business wealth generation. I am getting ready for BC to be the butt of the BCer jokes. Newfie jokes are no longer valid.

It is wide spread common knowledge that Victoria is for the "newly wed and nearly dead". It is not a big surprise that the culture, attitudes, and ways of doing everything is uptight, cliquey, repressed, slow, and sort of dumb down. The weirdo culture has been developing in the wrong direction for about 160 years of Victoria's existence. The place has been handicapped ever since Vancouver BC overtook Victoria as the big main city in BC, back in the late 1800's. Victoria does have the mental attitude and ability to pop out something fun and exciting sometimes. However, most of the time it is stoned and oblivious. It's a frustrating disappointment.

I was talking to some more of my friends and they say they had it with Victoria. They are going to move to Vancouver BC, and then onto Edmonton, Calgary AB, or even farther east. The dumb down mental attitudes, culture, cheap wages, lack of meaningful work in Victoria is frustrating them. Victoria is too restrictive, uptight, limited, and blocked. They would have move out of Victoria anyway, even if they won the lottery and don't need to work for cheap employers anymore. It is like everyone is trying to abandon ship before it sinks. The province of BC is the ship and Victoria is the incompetent captain.

Lots of fresh air and beautiful environment are part of the propaganda spin on how wonderful a paradise is Victoria BC. The pro zombie Victoria supporters won't ever tell you about the superficial friendliness, backstabbing bickering, slave exploitation labour market, slave wages, over abundance of Mc Cheap Ass employment, psycho bosses, uptight cliquey social culture, mental slow people, lazy procratinator people, poverty welfare free loading mindset. Of course Victoria BC is the only place on Earth with beautiful environment and fresh air. They say this over and over again because they don't have much else to brag about.

You are referring to Victoria BC as comparing apples to oranges!? You have the comparison scale all wrong. It is more like Victoria is a tiny metal Hot Wheels toy Porsche car and other cities like Vancouver BC, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Las Vegas, Honolulu, San Diego, Miami, Paris France, London UK, many others are the full size real Porsche car.

Either you suffer from "lowered expectations" or you happen to have several millions or billions of dollars saved up and you want for nothing, you don't need any opportunities because you are a walking, talking wishing well.

Some of my friends and I are comfortable landlords' kids because our parents own things like apartment buildings, houses, warehouses, strip mall centres, law firms, restaurants, stores, etc. Even we find Victoria totally lacking in good wage jobs, opportunities, social passion, quick thinking abilities. Do you have any idea how boring and demeaning it is to totally depend on parents' assets to live comfortably? They have all the gold and make all the rules to keep us under control, order us around to do their bidding because we have no economic clout of our own out in Victoria. It is a gilded cage. Is it possible you have much more and just need to snap your fingers to get instant results?

All through the 2012 Christmas holidays, not too many people stir in the shopping malls as they were below expectations. However, the food stores and liquor stores were full of people. Why is this? It is because web sites like Service Canada job bank, Craigslist, Used Victoria, Kijiji, BC Jobs, others are almost empty of any kinds of employment. The shelters and soup kitchens are full. The Victoria people are just too broke poor. The life quality and wealth opportunities in Victoria BC are really pathetic. I bet they are having more fun in money bag cities like Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Ottawa?

What style is there? Many immigrants and Canadians move to Victoria without doing any homework research and ended up buying into interior life. I guess when one is desperate to escape from whatever old hell hole they were from and bad situations, they can't be too picky on what insane asylum they need to escape to? The nut house prison is an improvement from hell hole. They all eventually find out about their new wage slave home and all its deficiencies.

Some immigrants from wherever have said they thought Victoria would be more and better. They were doctors, lawyers, business people, government officials, teachers, engineers back in their home countries. They bought into the emigrate to Canada sales pitch, especially to Victoria and BC. Now they are over qualified cleaners, security guards, retail sales staff, restaurant staff, hotel staff, delivery drivers, taxi drivers. They were sold a fantasy and the reality was sub standard. They wouldn't have traded in everything for here if they knew the truth.

A family friend in the real estate, financial services industries, with high ranking political, civil service, business connections said after a person has lived or visited big world cities like Hong Kong, Tokyo, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver BC, Calgary, and others, will realize just how slow, unintelligent, small minded, and restricted Victoria people are.

These factors may explain why someone told me that Victoria real estate property values may drop or has dropped 33%. This expert on a show may have something there? The jobs are few, unemployed, underemployed are many, and most of the wages that do exists are sub standard 3rd world. Victoria and BC should be smart enough to learn from successful provinces, like Alberta and Saskatchewan on how to pay staff, keep staff, and be rich and productive. Hiring cheap foreign workers while ignoring and stepping on the local citizen work force only self destructs in the end.

I talk to Victorians and in recent years after 2009, the usually negative commentary on Victoria jobs, wages, social life, living conditions, etc seems to be getting more intensely negative. The relocations to Victoria seems to be slowing down as well as the visiting tourists. The Victorians who live there seem to be loudly murmuring about moving away to Alberta for much better wages, lower housing and consumer taxes, because BC doesn't generate good wage jobs, practice almost slave labour, bad policies and tax everything to death while driving down prosperity, just to pander to the enviro terrorist nuts.

The problem is that BC, Vancouver Island, and especially Victoria is that it is generally, culturally cheap, small, think inside the box type of mentality it everything they do. This ends up with slow, half ass results, procrastination, and an overwhelming impression of slack or lazy. They are not smart or open minded enough to be wealthy. Places like Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario are wealthier because they don't rely on taxing people to death, cheap pay, to raise revenues. They practically pee and poop oil, gas, and industry money every time they beltch. They drive expensive cars and BCer drive junky, beater, rust crap cars.

Think long and hard before you turn a 2 week vacation to Victoria into permanent. Months, years, decades in Victoria is not as fun as only 2 weeks once every several years. Victoria is only good in small doses. Too much Victoria cultural dosage can be hazardous to your prosperity, happiness, contentment, intelligence, creativity, enthusiasm, and sanity. You will discover the prison of Victoria, Vancouver Island when the vacation fascade is stipped away by spending too much time.
Victoria Working Sucks

United States

#303 Jan 14, 2013
Having a need to work for a living in Victoria is horrible. They are basically cheap and abusive as a prevalent employment culture, unlike most places in Alberta, Ontario and other places in Canada. BC employers don't usually treat staff as nice as Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, etc. Working in Victoria BC is especially like working for Scrooge. Of course if you are rich and independent with no dependencies, others bow to you instead of you to them.

Owners, managers, supervisors will claim you are over qualified because they don't want to pay fair wages for good quality staff. They will end up hiring incompetent retards who always screw up. At the end, they will grudgingly hire the best screw ups possible and give them the higher wages you deserve if they had hired you at the beginning. Good workers end up with no work or cheap crappy paid work and the undeserving end up with the good jobs and pay. This maybe you new reality in Victoria if you blindly move.

I applied to various jobs in Victoria I know that I am qualified to do. All I got was a lot of run around about being over qualified or under qualified. They would probably have hired me on the spot in any other major Canadian city region with some common sense and brains? Victoria culture makes the region a frustrating bad circus. The mental asylum inmates are running the show.
