Is Victoria really a nice place to live?

I found phone interviews with HR staff in Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon, Ottawa, Los Angeles, New York City, Minneapolis, and others to be very intelligent and organized with a logical pattern. You know there will be a logical result in the job hirings. The unpleasant HR dealings many of us had with the local Greater Victoria company HR, owners, managers, supervisors is completely confused, illogical, with no pattern or expectation of a sensible result. Victorians are genetically incapable of rational business, political, economic decision making without the aid of a voodoo ceremony, virgin sacrifice, dart board, dices, rock paper scissors, spirit consultations with a ouija board and other crazy divination techniques. People run around half dazed and confused or fully dazed and confused.

Many people do not do any research and move to victoria for the nice environment. They will be unpleasantly disappointed. Unless the environment can pay your bills or the animal wild life can make you goals and dreams come true, it is irrelevant. If you have millions or billions, then you can wander around in a mental foggy daze to enjoy the environment and wild life. You won't find any kind of work, or make enough to cover the crazy living expenses with the pathetic wages in BC. Your life and the lives of your children, friends, relatives in Victoria will be quite substandard. Go to Alberta and Saskatchewan, the current high economic performers in Canada. BC is so far from the game, why even bother?

Life in Victoria just continuously dumps on locals and visitors who stay too long. The glitter is gone and replaced by frustration and dreary drab. It must be the bad vibes of the whole region that makes even a bright sunny day feel oppressive and grey? It is a good thing there is occasional sunshine or living and dealing with Victoria would multiple times more depressing. The entire region is like this.
not happening enough

Victoria is not happening enough as a city, a major Canadian city. I met many people who come to Victoria expecting good and big things with their lives and find excessive limitations instead. There is not enough of all the good things that everyone wants to going around. They are in short supply. I agree with all the comments about Victoria before mine. If I could relaunch my life from the beginning, I would not go to Victoria and choose other Canadian cities with more opportunities to go up not down. I was sold an expectation that can't be met by the local Victoria material available. They under performed expectations.

Even immigrants and locals who lived in Victoria found out the seasonal, low paid, limited job market in Victoria questioned their earlier choice to move to Canada, especially BC and Victoria the capital. The economy is partially crippled, work opportunities are pathetic, housing and living are artificially inflated and waiting to burst. Settle in Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon, the current hot Canadian cities for money. Victoria and Vancouver are just a mess waiting to collapse along with the rest of BC. Choose any of the other cities and provinces other than Victoria and BC.

Why even bother to immigrate to Canada to become a pizza cook, delivery driver, janitor, retail sales clerk, security guard, gardener, theatre usher, concession stand staff, house keeper, etc when you were a doctor, lawyer, business person, engineer, banker, architect, teacher, trades person, professional, government official back in your home country? You are going to have to move back to your home country to find worthwhile work for part of the year anyway. The locals will find any excuse to say you are not qualified to be hired at higher pay. They will try to push the lower cheap jobs on you while they experience the growing labour shortages and birth declines. They have less and less workers and claim no is good enough to work for them at the same time. The companies, labour unions, and governments will give you plenty of run around to waste you time. That's insane and inefficient.

Victoria is perfect for you if you don't need to work for a living and the issues that go along with working for a living. The pathetic pay, jobs, and savings of the locals is probably part of the reason why they are so socially repressed, gloomy, cold, standoffish, miserable, paranoid, cliquey, slow, dumb. How much joy in life can most people have when subject to these conditions long term? Many of the local employers have terrible ratings on the www.ratemyemployer.ca , Yelp web sites, that they now try to contract out the Human Resources to hiring companies and hide their true business name. They don't want job applicants to know who they are and their reputation in employee relations and customer satisfaction.

Any city region has ups and downs, but I feel Victoria just seems to have mostly downs than ups. The area consistently seems to operate not a malfunctioning care that doesn't have all its cylinders firing and running. It is dysfunctional. Lots of frustrated locals and other people opinionated it is dysfunctional. They took the slowest, least competent, laziest and put them all in charge. The inmates are running the asylum.

Victoria is not a place to make money. It is only a wet and temperate climate were snow rarely falls, full of left-wing marginalized environmentalists. Also a lot of government workers.
People donot like new commers because they see them as competition for scarce jobs.

No kidding. Victoria being not a place to make money is one of the reasons why many are experiencing a decline in happiness and contentment. Having more than the usual obstacles in the way to one's goals and dreams does seem to make people cranky, less sociable, more uptight, more dumb, more crazy. All the left over people are fighting over the low quality left over scrap jobs, scrap life. Does this place seem like a prosperous land of plenty? Oh you are so good, educated, and impressive but you are still not good enough for our Victoria table scrap lives. Almost all the foreign students flee from Victoria as soon as they get their papers from University of Victoria or Camosun Collge. They must know something? Perhaps they read all the ratings on www.ratemyemployer.ca for the Greater Victoria employers?

I moved here 4 years ago with my family from Ontario with the hopes of having a better lifestyle and unlimited opportunity. You would think on a smaller Island as beautiful as Victoria that the people who be more appreciative and maybe a little nicer, but what we and hundreds of other outsiders found is that the people here are colder than a praries winter. They are over-priveledged, anti social, self proclaimed and sadly lacking anything resembling social skills. Because of unrealistic real estate prices homeowners have experienced wealth that is unheard of in any other part of the country. In a nutshell the people here suck. The place is beautiful but the pretty beaches and the trees do not make up for the Islands lack of personality. It is overpriced so every other person has to build suites in thier homes so they can afford to put a roof over thier heads. They are jamming homes in every nook and cranny to accommodate the lack of affordable housing, leaving people permanently strapped and living off of credit pretending they actually have money. The health system here sucks and where else do you have to pay to have your garbage picked up. I am happy for those of you that are from here and have family but if any of you are planning on moving here without your family being there to help out with kids and whatnot, don't bother unless you have tons of extra cash to over pay for it. For those of us that wanted to come here and start a new life I want to say that the Island is like a giant high school with cliques that never let you in, that will
take 20 years to ever penetrate. My advice is to not give up your real family and friends for the crap that the Island offers and come here on vacation only, that way you are buying something from the shallow personalityless Islanders that will only be nice to you if you are buying something from them.
I will be glad to leave this Island and I feel dumber for having been on it.
Cheers
This hasn't been my experience at all. Huge networks of welcoming friendly people have embraced me in Victoria. I don't have enough time in the day for all the rad social stuff going on. Sorry it hasn't worked out but complaining won't help.

You have a money making job that actually pays all the bills, fulfill your goals and dreams, lots of non uptight friends? You are part of the lucky minority who didn't stuck with the mental and slow Victorians. I am a natural born Victorian and many of us can't stand our own people and the weirdo culture. We discontented Victorians are now spread out all over Canada and the provinces and to other countries even. What would other people think about Victorians? There must be something not right with the politics, policies, and culture that would encourage to leave to other places.

Perhaps that Steve guy was fortunate enough to live in a building and neighbourhood that contains almost all of the Greater Victoria area supply of smart, fast, alert, friendly people? Outside the compound walls are the countless hordes of Victoria indecisive, uptight, standoffish, cliquey, slow, dumb, clueless zombies. Just because of what you see directly in front of you doesn't mean that is the totality of existence. There is a lot you don't see beneath the superficial surface.
BC Low Gene Pool

Victoria must be the lowest genetics of all BC while BC is lower than all the other provinces. I have never met a bunch of people so strange and adverse to all things prosperous. These dead beat people would rather sit on their asses expecting free hand outs than doing their own things and get prosperous. The employers in this region must be some of the cheapest, greediest idiots in existence. They obviously don't get the concept of "you get what you pay for". Cheap, good, efficient, and not screwed up can not coexist. As one of the people, I really dislike the BC way and culture or paying cheap and then try to take back the little I get from lots of taxes, fees, levies. The environmental carbon tax is really retarded and counter productive. There are plenty more of other examples being promoted by eco weirdos.

Victoria is a great place to live if you are at the very top elite of society. Everyone bows to you instead of you bowing to others. The frustration and lowered quality of life as a average working slob dependent on pay cheque to pay cheque to live, then Victoria is not a nice place to live. This won't matter if you enjoy living low quality and lowered expectations. Victoria is lowered expectations for everything. You can check you goals and dreams at the entrance to Victoria. You won't be needing them again anytime soon.

Victoria is economically poor, job market stunted, social culture lacking and mediocre, as good as it gets. Many of the people don't seem happy, content, smart, fast, or even sane. Find the best practice policies and ways of doing anything and Victoria BC would not be included in the list of good examples to follow. The only way they can be happy in such a limiting place is to self delude themselves that everything is just great. Fantasy must cover up the reality. Look up those web sites mentioned in the previous posts. Do your research.

Some of the locals tell me short term vacations in Victoria is OK, long term living not so good. Living long term will make you poor, frustrated, depressed, bored, oppressed, and possible more than a little crazy. Jobs, wages, social life, uptight culture, excitement sucks. It is like most of the people in Victoria are just sitting around crossing off days on their calendars and waiting to die.

Victoria is a nice place to live if you are totally oblivious to all the comments listing all of Victoria's deficiencies. You would be the happiest living in Victoria in a constant drugged up state and not notice anything at all.

Victoria is Clown Town. The bizarre social culture has produced some of the most aloof, uptight, snobs in Canada, if not the most extreme in Canada already. Other major centres have snobs too, but they are qualified snobs because they are smart, rich, and powerful. Victorians mostly have none of these qualities for them to join the Snob Club. This culture is why everything and everyone seems to be run by "clowns". They seem to have a real talent for getting defeat out of victory, a lose from a win, depression from success, etc. Part of this has something to do with the fact they are slow, timid, paranoid, repressed, picky, bitchy, and dumb.

Praise this smart guy! I have seen the light and the truth has set me free! You can't even imagine how weird and tedious it is to be constantly surrounded by the hordes of clueless variety of Victorians who run around quoting their "Victoria and BC are the best places on Earth" cult like chants. It is like 24/7 enclosed by brain dead zombies. When is the emergency airlift evacuation coming to rescue me? We have to move fast if we have a chance to contain this undead zombie infestation from spreading out to the world from Victoria. We don't want a zombie apocalypse.
Very Slow Progress

Canada

#124 Apr 3, 2013
Greater Victoria has some social, economic, political progress and saying it is zero is not entirely true. The pace is really slow and you will likely die of old age before significant changes will be noticed. A lot of young, eager, talented people couldn't stand the dragging slow pace of thinking in Victoria and leave for better places. Unfortunately, Victorian attitudes doesn't embrace change and opportunities easily or willingly. You almost have to wrestling them to the ground and force change down their thoughts on every tedious detail. A dictator would be needed to force through some efficiency because if you allow them Victorians to progress at their own pace, it will take almost forever to get nothing done. They are just too aloof, standoffish, stingy, repressed, constipated, and paranoid.
