Student/Artist Housing Options in Victoria

I'll be moving to Victoria for graduate school in September, and I'm just wondering what areas/buildings should I be looking at?

I also paint and sell my work online. I'm currently in Edmonton and here we have newer apartments (small but modern) that artists can apply for and the rent is subsidized. Does Victoria have anything like that or is it just low-income housing?
I'm looking for something affordable, but also would like to live in a building that is close to the core and has a community feel with other adults, starting at mid/late 20's.

Here is an option, move back to where you were from originally because Victoria is a cheap slave wages, socially restricted, overly expensive dump. Vancouver is only slightly better because it is still within BC. In fact get completely out of BC to places like Alberta, Saskatchewan while they are still on the rise economically. BC is so far gone, there is probably little chance of saving it no matter who is in charge. BC and especially Victoria is just culturally incapable.

No, don't move to Victoria BC to live from Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City and any other cities. Victoria personifies BC, the cheap slave wages, low prosperity prospects, slow dull boring social life, slow dull boring people, and the high living costs compared to low wealth savings. The cheap wages and jobs along with too many taxes, fees, levies will squeeze you dry at both ends. It is ok to vacation in Victoria in small doses. Look up all the mostly negative comments about Victoria from other people and even some of the locals or you will be sorry ( ). You will be giving up your goals and dreams, prosperity for the sake of a little beautiful environment. You can do it only if you are rich and free from work issues. For many people the hidden dirty truth is painful and disappointing.
