AMATEUR BOXING in Greater Vancouver

The sport of amateur boxing has an interesting
and long history in Vancouver. I was the location
of the first Golden Gloves tournament in BC in 1939.

Over the decades there have been some excellent clubs
such as the SOUTH HILL - FIREFIGHTERS, the NORTH WEST EAGLES,
HASTINGS COMMUNITY CENTRE BOXING CLUB , the EAST VANCOUVER
OPTIMISTS BOXING CLUB and the last remaining old one from the
Sixties in Vancouver being the ASTORIA BOXING CLUB.

Over the decades many tournaments have taken place in
Vancouver. One of the best is considered by some to be
the SHRINE INTERNATIONAL DIAMOND BELT CHAMPIONSHIPS
that took place in 1967 with numerous boxers from BC and
other locations as far away as Montreal and California.

On a major International level, the biggest show in Vancouver
was the 1954 British Empire - Commonwealth Games that
featured some outstanding boxing with some excellent Canadian
boxers such as WILF GREAVES.

One of the legends and pioneers of boxing recently passed away
and the name is well known by many - TOMMY PAONESSA.
Some other past legends involved in amateur and pro boxing
were BILLY TOWNSEND, BERT LOWES, ELIO IUS and many others.

GREATER VANCOUVER BOXING

The longest running club in Vancouver is the ASTORIA BOXING CLUB that was started in 1966 by the BOYCE FAMILy and others including Johnny Creanza.
Some of the original boxers were Tommy, Wayne and Gerald Boyce, Clint Page, Rick Fleck Glenn McGee an Happy Seigner and in 1968 other. would be Bill Taylor and John Amos.

BILL TAYLOR had previously boxed for the London Boxing club in Victoria and was the 1967 Canadian amateur heavyweight champion. Also Astoria's Wayne Boyce was the 1967 Canadian featherweight champion.

In the mid-Seventies, former coach of the North West Eagles, Elio Ius would coach in the club until in 1977 GEORGE ANGELOMATIS and JACK DUKE would take over the operations. In 2011, the top boxer is women boxing's
JAIME WARD.
