Hi,
In Metro Vancouver, there are many Chinese speakers, but there are different languages under the Chinese umbrella. Which is more commonly used in Metro Vancouver by the Orientals: Mandarin or Cantonese?

Actually, 70% of Chinese speakers in Vancouver speak Cantonese due to a large influx in the 1980's. It may be different in Richmond which has a large Taiwanese population.

The person who said Richmond has a larger Mandarin population over cantonese is wrong. There are 3x more HK people in Richmond than Taiwanese. There are definately more Cantonese speakers than Mandarin in Richmond

Further to this discussion, parents may want to consider supporting this initiative to bring an early Mandarin Bilingual program to elementary schools (currently North Van and Vancouver)...this will be the first in BC. The proposal is to start at Kindergarten. 50% instrux in Mandarin and 50% instrux in English.

If the government starts to support Mandarin Bilingual program to elementary schools, you can kiss good bye English language domination in Vancouver. It will be one large Chinatown. Why new Asian immigrants should learn Engilsh? Everybody speaks Mandarin here!

Just remember if you want to be a Canadian, then you should be able to speak either of the two official languages. English or French it does not matter, just pick one, no mandarin, no cantonese, just english or french.

Cantonese in Vancouver? Maybe still in Richmond. Nowadays, its more like mandarin is the primary Chinese dialect. A lot of the HK immigrants who came to Vancouver is the 80"s wemt back home after discovering that China did not turn their beloved home into a communist wannabe example. The scare is over so many went back. Most of the Chinese immigrants who come to Vancouver now are from Taiwan or other areas of China. They speak mandarin. Since HK belongs to China now, they are now implementing Mandarin in the schools. Only permitting students to speak cantonese at home and not even in the school yard. Cantonese will slowly dissapear. Making Mandarin the dominant dialect in Vancouver.

I dont care whether Mandarin is more popular than Cantonese in Vancouver or whatever.
I just want to ask the mandarin speakers to shut their mouth up. They are very annouying. All they are trying to do is to beat Cantonese, because these Taiwanese and mainland Chinese believe they are better. And their language is more superior than Cantonese. Shut up, please respect the contribution we Cantonese speakers have done for the Chinese community in Van. We were the the major population to build the railway across Canada in the 19th century. In the 1980's, Hong Kong people came and worked so hard to establish a chinese community in Van. You Mandarin speakers are just lucky to come here in this recent decade and enjoy all these benefits. Now, you are requiring the Canadian gov to respect your "chinese culture" with whatever multiculturalism and chinese contribution in Canada. Have you really done anything to Canada?
On the other hand, you are against Cantonese by saying we are inferior of you? What makes you madarin speakers ridiculously selfish to enjoy the benefit we Cantonese speakers have contributed but ruin our Cantonese culture and language? We humbly accept we are minority in Canada, and so do you. Please respect the multiculturalism in Canada, if you want to be a real Canadian!

Definitely more Cantonese. Recently there more Mandarin speakers from Mainland Chinese. But the majority of Chinese speak Cantonese outside of Mainland China and Taiwan.

I agree with 1000.00%%%. The new comers from Mainland China think Mainland China is a superior country. What the heck do they come to Canada for then??? They are so blind folded by the dictators in Mainland China. The Chinaness from mainland China wants Canada to respect the Chinaness culture, but they have no respect for other cultures.

I really hated what this Shanghaier said here. What a frog under the well, Shanghainese is just think they are the best among Chinese. In fact, they talk a lot and did nothing. I have been living in Shanghai for more than 4 years. All I can see is people from outside Shanghai work extremely hard to build their city. We, who speaks Cantonese came to manage big project. Even though we speaks broken PUTONGHUA, they have to follow our order. I think mainland is uprising because they never improve and need to catch up now. Nevertheless, software in mainland is still a bunch of shit. Mr. Mao has brain washed them so they just know how to walk straight. As I am a Canadian, I would ask those mainland not to express to much in Canada. If you love your country then just go back and don't stay here. Don't even bother to get the citizenship and don't offer yourself cheap salary to get the job. Go back to destroy your market instead of ours. Most people said Cantonese sound better and I am totally agreed. Cantonese can speak at least 2 chinese languages but mainland just often speak only one and the other dialect don't even use. If you want to compare the best just go back and stay where you are. Canada does not belong to you. Those who came to immigrate to Canada before the 80's are rich and smart Chinese. Not like now, most mainlanders are smugglers and use back door to came in. Less educated and uncivilized, you are lucky that you can stay in Canada. So just shut your mouth if you want to stay here! I don't see the good future of China, just maybe good for another 5 - 10 years. You all will see what is going to happen! Haha...

Really? Any datas to back your claim.
Look no further to the Census: http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/english/census06/d...

Cantonese: 104,680
Mandarin: 59,675
You sound like an ignorant fool who can't backup your claim.

hmm what shanghaier wrote is so much stereotypical that I'm not sure if that sarcasm or not.

Well I grew up in Europe and the impression of Mainlanders here is pretty clear.
Load, badly behaved, no manners, sometimes scruffy ah did I mention uncivilized already?
fyi, Taiwanese people keep promoting to visit China, because it is a good laugh to watch their bad behaviours.

guys... let me tell you something. from a mainlanders perspective. dont take this personally, but. first, cantonese people as well as taiwanese people look ugly. they look SE vietnamese. and they repesent the ENTIRE CHINA abroad. that is very embarrasing. 2nd language of cantonese is very very annoying and choppy, no wonder why for many years, many people make fun of chinese peoples speaking. 3rd. taiwanese speak annoying minan, hakka, mandarin. and theey dont look mainland chinese either. mainland chinese look korean/mongolian. cantonese/taiwanese look half japanese half vietnamese. 4th. cantonese/taiwanese are short and skinny. and they seem to always spaz, and get hyper. they are like rats. whereas mainlanders are calm, quiet, tall, and big. and speak normal not high pitch or choppy mandarin. okay??.. i wish more mainlanders can go abroad. china is advancing, so that is why more and more mainlanders are coming. 1.3 billion CHINESE, cantonese and taiwanese only 150 million, cannot represent all of china. please, its embarrasing for us to be asociated with the chinese abroad.
Hey Shanghaier! First, you need to write better English. I can barely understand you. Obviously you don't have a lot of education. SE Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Cantonese are very nice looking people. We are very fine tuned. You mainlanders are rough and rugged. We, Cantonese, go out to dominate world in business even as early as two hundred years ago. We, Cantonese from HK, donate money to Shanghai to build your city. Yes, the Taiwanese also did the same. If you don't know that, you obviously don't know about your people and city.

Wow not only are you ignorant, you're also racist.
If we have to compare the two languages (or dialects, whatever you guys like to call it) in terms of legit-ness, Cantonese wins hands down. 4,000 years of history. Mandarin? 500 years of history at most. Qin Shi Huang, Three Kingdoms... all these mega super famous Chinese historical figures and eras... all of these ppl spoke old Chinese... which is actually, an older form of Cantonese.
Wong Fei Hung, Ip Man, Sun Yat-sen, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan... all these people are native Cantonese speakers. So are you saying they're also embarrassing to China?
