Kashechewan rescue efforts thwarted

and a forecast snowstorm delayed an evacuation effort in two Northern Ontario First Nations communities yesterday, stranding residents again facing rising floodwaters of the Albany River.

More than a dozen aircraft were poised to help evacuate nearly 1,900 residents of Kashechewan and Fort Albany, reserves in the coastal area of James Bay, some 450 kilometres north of Timmins.

But poor weather grounded rescue crews yesterday, delaying the planned evacuation of all but 47 who were flown out to Greenstone. It's hoped the others can be airlifted today, weather permitting.

Kashechewan and Fort Albany are not accessible by road...

Snow-battered Trans-Canada re-opens in Manitoba

The Trans-Canada Highway in southeastern Manitoba and northwest Ontario has re-opened following a nasty spring snowstorm.

Dozens of cars and semis were stranded by the storm.

However, Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation describes much as the highway as having poor driving conditions and slippery sections.

Further east in northwest Ontario, some sections of the Trans-Canada remain closed, but all area highways are described as snow-covered or snow-packed...

Airlift of flood-threatened James Bay communities restarted as weather improves

“The ice hasn't broken up though on our side of the river.”

- A mass airlift of flood-threatened First Nations communities on the shore of James Bay resumed Sunday, one day after rain, fog and snow scuttled evacuation plans, Ontario's Community Safety Ministry said.

The weather improved sufficiently early in the day to allow 97 people to be flown from Fort Albany to Moosonee, en route to Kapuskasing, ministry spokesman Patrice Cloutier said.

"Airlift operations have restarted," Cloutier said. "Planning is still underway to make sure that we take everybody in those communities out." Read more
