This is just so freaking PC it hurts, you come to canada to acquire the benifits of Canadian culture the least you can freaking well do is learn the language, I'm not prepared to spend my tax dollars printing gov. documents in Punjabi --- If you want services in Punjabi go live in Punjab.

First of all Lelslie Marshall, What benefits of Canadian culture are you talking about to acquire? Punjabi or are you talking about Chinese or French? Like it or not Leslie, Canada is a multi-cultural country. We thrive on multi-culture and are proud of that. Remarks like yours give our "Country" a negative light. As far as your comment Paul, yes we as the Indo-Canadian community have given a lot to our Canadian society. What have you done Paul? Except making negative remarks of a specific community. HYMMMMM...

Yes, Canada has two official languages, english and french. Constitutionally, all Canadians have the right to speak the language of their choice. However, countries must be run with some type of efficiency. Most countries have only one official language, but we have 2. This means that all government documents must be printed in both languages, nearly doubling publication costs. Making Punjabi an official language would increase this cost by another 50% Why not just make every language official so then all groups will be happy? Answer: no one would be happy because the cost would be astronomical (passed to taxpayers) and no one could even find what they`re trying to say in their own language.

Not being official doesn`t mean its any less of a language. It means that it is not the official language. Canadians should be happy with the freedoms we already have and rejoice that we can speak our own language without political discrimination.

I am from the Indo-Canadian community and I would like to point out that many in this community have given us a bad name ... drug dealers, wife beaters, Khalistanis, terrorists, etc; etc; ....
Every ethnic community in Canada has contributed to Candian society and where would we be if the largest ethnic community, the Chinese also wanted official language status for Mandarin or Cantonese? I left India because tax dollars were spent on such petty things instead of more important things like putting a roof over the heads of the homeless, etc;
Two official languages are enough for Canada ... the rest can be spoken at home.

Why can't these East Indians learn English or French like most generations of immigrants before them. Canada will be like Africa, many languages, cultures and tribal attitudes. They believe that they can change our law in their favor anytime they like but when it comes to obeying and respecting our laws then they create an East Indian mob scene to disrupt any Canadian law they do not want to take part in. I am so tired of their B.S. and almost everyone I have heard discussing this topic agrees. The only reason they have any support is because they tell their people how to vote and politicians become pussies when it comes to dealing with these radicals. I wish it were not so but that is the pathetic result of 80's Multi-culture in Canada. Either take the time to learn English or French or go back home where you can do whatever East Indian things that you like.

Is this seriously an issue? I am so tired of this petty bi*ching! You came to Canada knowing what we speak... you are not a majority... your not even a majority of the minorities. Why do you feel that you deserve special privileges over others? We pride our self on being multicultural and embracing others attitudes and beliefs, that does not mean that we need to make everything official. I am a Canadian, I learnt both of the languages and am now working on a third. Its not that difficult. Try getting along with others rather than segregating yourselves.
Here’s a though, anyone who doesn’t like it here and how this country is run, can move to China. See how they deal with your diversity!

Well put.

The minority should stop asking for more in Canada and stop expecting miracles from the word 'multi culture'.

I think that you should get your facts straight before you post something. Indo-Canadians are the 2nd largest Minority group in Canada, with the Chinese community being the largest minority group. Although I do not believe that Canada needs to make Punjabi an official language, I think that the Indo-Canadian community has every right to approach the government with a request to make it an official language. French is an official language in Canada, but French speaking Canadians have not segregated themselves from English speaking Canadians, as a matter of fact many French-Canadians are bi-lingual, so what makes you think that Indo-Canadians are segregating themselves by asking for some recognition of their language.
Congratulations on learning different languages but that doesn't mean you are anything special, some languages are easy to learn while others are difficult. Your comment saying that learning a language is "not that difficult" is plain ignorance. You may know the languages of some different countries in the world but that doesn't eliminate the clear stereotypes you hold of different ethnicities.
