Canada Coast guard takes brunt of fisheries department cuts as Navy no where for Arctic Sovereignty

There are 1 comment on the CBC News story from May 17, 2012, titled Canada Coast guard takes brunt of fisheries department cuts as Navy no where for Arctic Sovereignty. In it, CBC News reports that:

the USA CGC Polar Sea had made an unauthorized transit of Canada's Northwest Passage in 1985 early in Brian Mulroney's administration,

provoking a strong nationalist out-cry across the country.

However, budget cuts in the late 1980s saw proposed expansions of the coast guard and armed forces scrapped.
