What a shame! The first, and thereby oldest, Roman Catholic parish to serve the Portuguese-American community is going to be closed. St. John the Baptist parish is older than the Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish that it is slated to merge with.

What will happen to the grammar school attached to St. John's? Mt. Carmel closed their grammar school several years ago!

I know it is an economic and staffing decision, but still, more weight could have been given to the historical value of St. John's!

Don't get me wrong. I was brought up in Mt. Carmel's parish and graduated from that grammar from that grammar school. I just regret, with the closing of St. John's, the loss to the areas Portuguese-American community.
