Angela, Julie and Heather...
I have just found this blog. 1st. of all, my condolences for your loss in the aftermath of that terrible explosion. I am a retired RCMP officer. I was stationed in Saint John from 1969 to 1974. I remember the night of January 4th. 1974 very well. I'm not sure how secure this site is, so I am really apprehensive about opening a 'Pandora's Box' relative to what happened from my perspective that dramatic night. But I'm sure for you folks the horror and your loss was certainly more traumatic than mine...however I lived it as well so maybe I can help you find some measure of closure to that terrible night.
At the time, I lived at Mansfield Place, just off Sand Cove Road on the West Side, in a 2 bed-room appt. on the 3 floor. I worked Highway Patrol out of our old Douglas Avenue then, but on that terrible night I was OFF Duty and home with my wife and 2 daughters (4 and 2)and visitors for a game of Scrabble,(a SJ City Police officer and his wife).
I wont use full names, but earlier that day, I had filled my PC after my 'day shift' at the RF Irving as I always did. I had done that for 3-4 years, and knew everyone who worked there very well. My friend (Rupert - from Welsford) served me as usual. What happened only a couple of hours later,(because of a terrible confluence of events)took the lives of your loved ones.
In a direct line from where I lived to the Station, was about 1 km. I was separated by many houses, a hospital, etc. and the Saint John River, but the explosion was incredible. If you would want me to continue with what had happened that night, please let me know. I'm in the process of writing a diary of my career - not a book - just a diary - so my children and grand-children will have some idea of what their dad and grand-dad did for a living, and January 4th., 1974 is certainly a part of it. If you wish....contact me at mp25366@hotmail.com...and I will tell you a lot more about that terrible night.
I am sure you have heard every perspective of what occurred, however you may be interested in my purvue of that night when your loved-ones died.

Actually, it was the accumulation of gas/oil under the service station that caused it to explode 20 mins after the collision. So sad.

I'm not sure why people are disagreeing with the above-mentioned date of January 4, 1974. That was on a Friday. In the Telegraph-Journal from Saturday, January 5, 1974, an article headlined with "Blast Rocks City" appears in the newspaper, describing what was known about what happened late the night before. Also, in the Telegraph-Journal from Monday, January 7, 1974, a headline to an article entitled "Three Bodies Found in Ruins - Search Continues for Two More" pinpoints the explosion as happening at 11:35pm Atlantic Standard Time. Can someone who disagreed with the date tell me why they did, given that there is evidence available pinpointing the date to January 4, 1974?
