Sure Sure try Leaving Outdoor Education Centres Open

24 February 2007
The Honourable Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario
1795 Kilborn Av
Ottawa, Ont., K1H 6N1
[email protected]
Mr. McGuinty:
I am a teacher with the Avon Maitland DSB and a director of the Ontario Society for
Environmental Education.
I am writing because I am concerned that the Ottawa-Carleton DSB is once again considering
closing its Bill Mason and MacSkimming Outdoor Education Centres. MacSkimming holds a
special place in my heart as I did my first practice teaching session there. To witness the thrill of a
young student touching a wild bird held in my hands was amazing. Children who are able to have
similar, perhaps once in a lifetime experiences, will feel connected to nature. They will grow up
understanding that we are a part of nature and that we have to respect it. All children in Ontario
should have the opportunity to have such experiences at outdoor education centres in their area.
Please consider specific funding for outdoor education centres within the funding formula.
No school board should be faced with an annual decision of whether or not to close its outdoor
education centres. Many outdoor education centres across Ontario have either closed or have
had their teaching staff drastically reduced over the past number of years, both before and since
your government has been in power. Please take action to turn this around. The children of today
have to deal with the poor environmental legacy that we are leaving them. Help them grow up to
be good environmental stewards.
