It's not just corn farmers. The price any farmer receives for anything they grow or raise have basically not gone up in my entire lifetime of 38 years. Only farmers would be stubborn enough to keep going in a market like that. Big business would have reevaluated and closed their doors.

Farmers should grow FOOD not fuel. With so many starving people its just plain dumb to take all that corn out of our food chain.

there is such a crisis when it comes to the farming and production of food/grain or otherwise. whether it is used for human food consumption or for fuel production, farmers should always receive a decent price for their hard work and the sale of their product. my question is, how did it all begin...why have farmers not been getting a good price? if canada is really concerned about the production of corn for ethanol then why is it not willing to pay top dollar for it? and if canadians continue to enjoy eating bread and beef then why do farmers always get short changed? its just not a fair system.

There is a simple, plausible explanation. Farmers produce and sell a RAW product. If they refined it -thereby cutting out middlemen- and marketing it themselves, profit margins would be much higher. Their farm infrastructure can't change to produce a different product when the prices are low so they need subsidies. Accordingly, a beef producer should also make and sell sausage to turn a viable profit. Many delude themselves with the 'bigger becomes profitable' doctrine. The reality is only the debt burden and losses increase. Essentially, most farmers are bad businessmen not willing to adapt to a new market reality.
