I lived at R.C.A.F Station Ottawa (the name I knew it by) from 1956 to 1962.
The chatter in recent years is " Redevelopment of the land " that was the former military site. They want to create a " Model Community". I can safely say that for me in my own humbe opinion that the Rockcliffe I knew WAS AN IDEAL COMMUNITY. In my opinion the Government made a huge mistake in tearing down the housing, these homes WERE SALVAGABLE!!. The homes were older yes but across this country countless military personal are still living in them quite nicely thankyou. A small business center could have been built around the old Parade Square. Why did the Government not buy up the surplus facilities that the Military no longer needed at Rockcliffe, things like the Indoor and Outdoor Pools, and kept the Base Ball diamonds and track and feild facilities simply maintained. No, they let it all be torn down and or go to ruin. Now, they want to re-create the community that was already there but they destroyed. R.C.A.F Station Rockcliffe is gone now let us hope that this new community they are hoping to build out of the barren land will honour the memory of a once great place to live and work.
