Your optimism that the Conservation Halton plan for Glenorchy Conservation Area will "ensure that this fragile landscape will be ... restored to its original splendour and protected" is tempered by your concern for the threats to nature posed by ATVs and other activities of individuals.

Our River Valleys Under Attack

November 5th – Our river valleys, wetlands, and woodlands are the lungs and kidneys of our ecosystem. They filter and purify our air and drinking water, helping to prevent harmful reactions in our bodies. They also trap carbon to prevent global warming and its associated problems. Unique plant and animal species rely on these habitats for survival, and we enjoy relaxation and recreation there.

In Peel Region, the vast majority of our natural areas are river valley lands. Right now, these essential natural areas are facing a serious threat. The Region of Peel is about to approve an irresponsible policy that will permit development of sports fields, golf courses and single homes right in the heart of our river valleys! This type of development badly damages river valleys, and we must re-directed it to areas where its impact is more sustainable.

If this policy is passed, the gates will be open and there will be no turning back. These are the last remaining natural areas in Brampton that we have a chance to save from development. If we fail to act, we will be the ultimate losers when we suffer from increased health problems, decreased passive recreation opportunities, and even more over-crowding than we currently face.

The City of Brampton is the chief supporter of this destructive policy, and is urging the Region to adopt it. Sierra Club Peel is speaking up to oppose this policy, but we need your help. Your personal opposition to this policy must be heard loud and clear by Mayor Fennell and all Councilors.
