Get a clue,
It's been the same story @ MG, Erin Mills, Surveyors, and Ottawa for years. Ajax has been open for what, a few weeks? MG has been open for almost 10 years and it still is a trainwreck for inbound drivers.
Thanks for the expert opinion based on a coversation with " a couple of drivers"
lol....
I don't need to talk to every driver that comes in the building to know that Ajax is, and will continue to be a horrific mistake made by Loblaws.
Trying to save money by farming out your work to the lowest bidder is rarely a good idea, and it's not like the problems Loblaws has had in the last few years are the fault of the warehouses anyway, it's at the store level, and at PC circle.
MG continues to put out record numbers in almost every measurable area, and we aren't even running anywhere near capacity. We are the flagship of the entire distribution system, and no 3rd party warehouse will ever do what we are capable of.

I would suggest to anyone who has commented in this forum pro Ajax, pro union, or anti both to think long and hard before applying to the Ajax facility. Number one...hardly any lifting?? It's all lifting regardless of what job you have. Number two...$14 and having to work weekends. I've worked 22 years for this company and work at a 130% pace daily. That works out to 60k a year but no dog f$%@ing here. Most at Maple Grove work at this pace and at least a part of the weekend if not all. I am lucky and have Monday to Friday but I have 22 years. All the promises they tell you will soon come crashing down. If you need money to survive then start there but look for other work fast. It's a job created for single, teenage kids who they can abuse. It's a revolving door of employees because all the good jobs and shifts are taken by senior employees who are not leaving. Try it and then post your remark. I guarentee a different respose then.

I have read alot of these comments and all I see is a blame game. Blame the government, blame the company, blame the union.
Reality Sucks, look in the mirror we are all accountable and to blame for what this region is going through right now. Maybe we should all ban together and put forth a solution to fix it.
Just a thought, blaming one another is not going to creste a solution.

Just went to Atlas, Ajax for the first interview a week ago. It was the usual stuff.. questions on safety, etc.. "What would you do if..", From what I was told, it's mostly pick and pack. Their idea of 'state of the art' is the WMS system, and oh yeah.. in house counter balance training, so Forklift Operator Cert. matters not.
Apparently the next bout is a group orientation I think, we'll see.

Loblaws is crazy if they think this will run smoothly. This is a disaster waiting to happen. I'm sure Atlas has never dealt with produce, frozen or even the tight daily scheduling that Loblaws Distribution has handled themselves in the past. The growing pains Atlas and Loblaws will deal with will send shockwaves through investors and we will all relish in what I'm sure will be a dismal service level for years to come. I can only hope that Loblaws' Cambridge facility is ready to pick up the slack! The way Loblaws has the U.F.C.W in its back pocket, I was actually surprised they would go the third party route. In the last few years the way they have rushed into distribution changes with General Merchandise and the sinking stock price, we can only watch and laugh as we board this sinking ship and we will all say "we told you so." I would wage a fair buck that Atlas' service level will not exceed 70% for at least 10 years. Good Luck to all current Loblaws Distribution employees in the future and lets not let this "union" of ours screw us out of a fair severance package.
It's hilarious reading what you wrote considering I work there and they're doing really damn well so far.

i dont see how you could pick at 130% every day working at maple grove unless you were on forks. i mean, i could do it picking, but i always suffered back injuries. You always get slow jiggers, tons of people in your way cause its always packed, skids that dont stack well, impossible orders, so many things bound to go wrong. the only way to keep high numbers is to work at an unsafe pace. the incentives make it unsafe. they should just have people slow it down a bit, its not like loblaws is losing money on efficiency, im sure their distribution channel is a lot better than sobey's. probably trying to get on some wal-mart style inventory system and that doesnt really suit loblaws' brand image.

I've worked at the Ajax facility for close to two months now, and they have treated us very fairly considering the growing pains they are still experiancing, as for efficiancy we ship close to 60,000 cases a day which isn't bad considering only two departments in produce are stocked and no grocery yet.

reality is it's a warehouse job, you're not going to make 50k a year without incentive bonus', there's gonna be lifting, alot of walking, and alot of people who can't/don't want to, hack it

LOL.....you make it sound like only UFCW card holders can drive a lift or pick some cases. THIS IS NOT SKILLED LABOR. It will be a good measuring stick. Ajax is the identical in size to MG. If you think Third party is not a good "bang for the buck". Ask former EM employees. Ottawa's contract will be up in September 09. The future of that DC will be an indicator of the performance of Ajax. Time will tell....

update: I just received a package last week containing some "backcheck forms" done by a third party company and an conditional agreement from Atlas. This seems to be taking longer than I'm normally used to for a warehouse job that would be technically considered "General labour", I mean it's not rocket science! Anyway we'll see what happens next.

Well lots of interesting comments. I was Union president for 15 years and a member for 23. Saw lots. Unions are big buisiness and survive by collecting dues. Yes they protect to a point but I believe if you work hard you can survive with out them. As for Atlas I have an interview spoke to some of the employees and so far I am surprised at how many happy employees they have, they actually smile going into and comming out of the facility.I ahvn't seen that in years at the Unionized shops.

Those smiles will be gone in a hurry once the honeymoon period is over in a few months. I don't know what the expectations there are right now, but it will change over time, and all those happy people will turn into miserable pricks just like us, only they will have smaller pay checks, and crappier benefits.

$14/hour is a fine FT start rate (that's what I started at), but there's no reason why you shouldn't be making ~$20 within 5 years, and don't get fooled into thinking that just because you work in a warehouse that you don't deserve $20+, it is a tough, backbreaking, and mind-numbing job that not everyone is cut-out to do.

Now thats realistic. I am in Management and I do believe a Union is needed in some places, but atleast give it a chance before you judge.
