Former New Waterford resident has made a New Year's Resolution to be a Hero for the Alberta Cancer Foundation by participating in The Weekend To End Breast Cancer in Calgary.
My name is Utah (Hawley) MacDonald and on July 27-29, 2007 I will be participating in a very special event called The Weekend to End Breast Cancer in Calgary. I'll walk (or crawl) 60 kilometers over the course of one weekend with thousands of other women and men. The net proceeds will support breast cancer research, treatment, and services through the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
I have organized a team called Breast Friends For Life. Each member on my team has committed to raising a personal goal of $2,000 to participate in The Weekend To End Breast Cancer which makes our team goal $8,000. You can view my personal page and my team page online at www.endcancer.ca Click on "Calgary", click on "Sponsor a Participant", type in "Utah MacDonald". You can donate directly through my personal page or you print a donation form through my personal page that can be mailed.
I am very proud that I have just taken the first step on this extraordinary journey. I am so excited that I am joining a very special group of people united in their commitment to end breast cancer. The work we do together will help save lives, it's as simple as that. It's through the efforts of people like every one of us that Alberta Cancer Foundation is able to continue its work in breast cancer research, treatment, and education. So together, we hope to bring an end to breast cancer forever.
I am doing this walk for my mom (Kathleen "Nunnie" Hawley) who passed away 15 years ago to cancer. She had breast cancer and the cancer later spread to other areas throughout her body. For thirteen years she bravely battled trying to be strong for her family. I was only seven years old and watched everything she went through to try and hang on for us. Its hard to watch someone you love most in the world deteriorate away year after year. My mom was such an amazing person and her courage was absolutely incredible. She kept us smiling no matter what she was going through. I sadly lost my mom when I was only 20.
I now have two boys of my own and I want to have the chance to watch my boys grow old. I want to be at their wedding and I want to have the chance to love and hold their children someday. My mom never had the chance to do that with me. This is for my mom and the many other people I have lost to cancer, my family and friends and the many other wonderful people I will meet throughout my lifetime. I appreciate your support so that I can make this incredible journey!
According to the National Cancer Institute of Canada, approximately 20,500 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and about 5,400 will die from the disease. That's why I'm walking so far. To do something bold about breast cancer. I hope that you'll share this incredible adventure with me - by supporting me in my fundraising efforts.
