French Canadians outside of Quebec are only known for poutine which is quite disgusting. The famous smoked meat sandwiches and bagels are courtesy of the Jewish community. Poutine is not a traditional food as you might think or be lead to believe, it is a recent invention.

VIVE LE QUEBEC LIBRE!
Most of the buildings in Montreal's downtown and old port were built by the English, so shut up, because you don't even know the history of this place, which was mostly built by the Scottish. French Canadians had very little to do with it, except maybe their disgusting poutine.

Prior to the British Conquest which took place in 1759, for one hundred years of French occupation, nothing was accomplished in Montreal. The French didn't manage to build up the place in one hudred years, and then along came the British and the place began to boom. The French in Quebec are very lazy.

For Canadians in the rest of the country, learning French would be a waste of time.

JewelBocks I feel sorry for you. To have to live here and hate it so much must make you feel helpless and trapped. Why did you come back?

As far as me, I'm not brainwashed by any means. Montreal is very far from perfect. Taxes are high. Roads are terrible. I'm learning but my French sucks and I find people appreciative of my trying and I rarely find someone who is rude. And if they are rude then it's a good chance they are just rude to begin with. I have found equal part of A-holes in both official languages.

I've been all over the U.S. and Canada. Every city has it's negative points. But I've found in life that life is a lot of what you make it to be.

My life is not perfect but it is good and I am happy here because I make the best of where I am. My happiness is not the responsibility of Montreal or Quebec or Canada or the world. My happiness is MY responsibility.

Your happiness, or lack of happiness, is YOUR responsibility and no one elses. If you are unhappy stop blaming a whole city or province.

It is true that the city is filled with French beer drinking rednecks who can't stand anything that isn't "québécois". They act like they're proud of the culture here, but we all know that the quebecois have no culture that is actualy their own, it all belongs to the Italians, the Jewish, the Greek etc etc. All the great things that the québécois like in Montreal come from exterior sources. The French people of Quebec are very narrow minded people, but....they tend to hide it very well. It's only getting worse. Get out of Montreal the first chance you get, it's a sinking ship filled with drunk, Anglo hating, French farmers.

Montreal sucks! I've lived there for a while and the quality of life is discusting. You get taxed like crazy yet you get nothing in return. The city is a joke compared to other major cities in Canada like Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary...

I have been to many many major cities in the world, and I can tell that Montreal is a very nice city to live in. We dont to have envy anywhere else really.

I was surprised to see so many people list Tokyo as a better city to live in, clearly you haven't lived there as I am now. Its a crowded place... more than you can imagine, the living cost is also insane, and thats without speaking of the size/price of apartment. The working hours are insane and the pay goes almost all out in living cost. In fact, I also have 2 Japanese friends from Tokyo who studied at McGill and Concordia and wish to go back live in Montreal eventually.

Why do you ask? Because people living in Montreal just seems happier... less pressure at work, more vacation, many cultural events and festivals to enjoy, especially in the summer, pubs and bars to enjoy cheap drinking (especially compared to Tokyo price) it's also easy to make friends from all over the world as we are quite a multi cultural society (not only third world immigrants, although there is some!). The public transportion is quite cheap as well when you compare it to Tokyo. Plus, we have 5 universities, with beautiful campus, which include 2 of the top 3 universities in Canada which makes it one of the youngest (and educated) city in north america.

Sure we have high taxes and the occasional quebecois redneck, but its minor downside to a great city. People who are frustrated with Montreal probably never had the opportunity to make great friends, go out, and enjoy a lively city that is good and easy to live in.

I live in Montreal and I hate it, also Quebec. Montreal is a city that never evolved into something bigger, and it never will. I blame this on the french people because they are ignorant. When you compare Toronto and Monteal, toronto is the city that wins. TO is the Canadian NYC.

I have lived in Vancouver Toronto and Montreal.
All three have it's good points and bad but the problem with Montreal is its blatant corruption through out its government bodies that's really letting down the city and its people. They need to set up an independent anti corruption watch dog that is fully integrated with french and English speaking people which gets federal funding. Only then will the city start to change.

I lived in Montreal for 3 years and would never move back there. I had fun at one time in the city and learning French and did get some job experience in my field from starting with an internship but staying there longterm as an anglophone doesn't make sense. You will never have the same career options as an anglo even if your French is good. Salaries are low, I am making way more back in Alberta and the cost of living isn't that much lower compared to how much lower the salaries are. People are quite rude, its not a French thing as Quebec city is much nicer, just Montreal is rude. The homeless problem is out of control and you can't walk a block downtown without people bugging you for change. You can't trust people there as they will steal from you everywhere. I have never had anybody complain that their tip wasn't high enough anywhere but Montreal. The best decision I ever made in my life was to move back to Calgary. Why anglos still live there and put up with discrimination as a marganlized minority is beyond me. It does have a decent nightlife and some cool things about the city but the cons far outweigh the pros.

Joe, you are right about everything you said. The French will very brazenly rip you off. There is nothing but fighting over language and race in Quebec and the Anglos are basically shut out of life there. It is only fun to visit. Also, the police are very corrupt and dishonest and they do not always respect your civil rights. If you are English Canadian and curious about Montreal, please think twice about moving there unless it is for university. After that, you will have to move to an English speaking area. It makes not difference if you speak French.

to all you that hate it here, to all you that are bored, to all you that can't find a job, to all you crybabies, to all of you idiots:
MOVE AWAY! DONT STAY HERE!
stop wasting your and our time! stop crying and leave immediately! stop complaining about no jobs, stop dreaming about where it's better and leave us alone. that would help both sides: you would get a job, a new house, less weather (!?!?!?), free living and whatever came into your mind. we would have more jobs, better living quality, less pollution and with everyone single one of you simple minded idiots moving away the average IQ would rise.

go away and stop complaining! now!

and to all the crybabies responding and quoting this: stop complaining, do it better and go where you say it is better and stop trying to make everyone feel miserable only because your own life stinks so much! enough said.
