Mario Charlebois says Riverview should offer bilingual services

There are 55 comments on the telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com story from Oct 12, 2010, titled Mario Charlebois says Riverview should offer bilingual services. In it, telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com reports that:

Has the town of Riverview reached the plateau required to offer its services in both official languages?

A business plan prepared by the town indicates the following:

"Bilingualism: The majority of residents in the Town of Riverview are first language English. However, according to the census, 38 per cent claimed to be knowledgeable of both official languages (English and French), giving the town a much higher average bilingualism rate compared to the majority of cities and towns in New Brunswick."

I was wondering why Riverview doesn't offer its services in both official languages if it has reached the 20-per-cent plateau?

As of the 2006 census it had a population of 17,832. Although this population is sufficient for Riverview to petition the province to be reclassified as a city, the municipal government has opted to remain as a town. Note that New Brunswick requires that all cities be officially bilingual.

riverview is growing fast and has a lot of space to expand .......

I as a mostly French speaking CANADIAN bever had a problem on that side of the river communcating with them ..wether it was in French or English usually they have some one on staff that can help you out if you happen to be short of words ........

but some of the French suprimist do not consider that!

me as a bilingual Canadian i considered that as long as i can communicate with the persons ....and they can communicate back to me IS THE WAY TO GO

Notme!! You have changed your tune! Good to see that as long as we can "communicate" this is a good thing, exactly what I and many others have been saying all along! All the french speak english, so why is there an issue here with "communication??

so how come the French are not allowed ask for French signage?

that is part of communication many of us cannot read and understand English properly and French is one of the national language ???

why can an English person be able to UNDERSTAND FRENCH so we can express ourself correctly

but on the same token we should understand you if you speak English ..

i have a lot of English speaking Canadian friends and almost 90% of them understands French but are afraid to speak because of their accent so very often i will be speaking French to them and they answer in ENglish it is called communication

Why do bilingual french people have to be such arrogant asses. If you know both languages, it shouldn't be an issue. What the Hell do you people want, every Canadian to learn french?

And before you say that you all had to learn English, you chose to live in a mostly English area, so get over it.

I am francophone and I do agree here with Jim Steeves. Anyway, people should get along, no matter the language they speak.
