Tierhogar House is a six- bedroom, refurbished period residence on 46 acres beside the Heritage Hotel, Golf & Country Club in Killenard, Co Laois.
Originally built in the early 1600s, it was once owned by a Huguenot family. It has been owned by the Behan family for most of the last 100 years. In 2005 they undertook an extensive refurbishment of their 392sqm (4,229 sq ft) home and retained the period features which they came to love. It is now for sale for 750,000.
Tierhogar is approached via a sweeping, tree-lined avenue which frames the panoramic views across the lawn field. Its trees include chestnut, beech, copper beech, lime, sycamore and ash. Several hundred trees have been planted around the lawn together with a grove of Sequoia Redwoods.
Among the period features are the cornice in the bright entrance hall and picture rails and fire places in the drawing room and dining room. Original timber floors and brass light fittings are seen throughout the house and its original push bells are working.
A study and guest WC are also located off the front hall. Off the back hall is the kitchen equipped with an AGA oven and Agamatic solid fuel boiler, as well as De Dietrich double oven, integrated microwave, four-ring ceramic hob, polished granite worktop and island with sink unit.
Its breakfast area enjoys a bay window where seating overlooks the gardens. Its work and storage space is supplemented by a scullery and cloakroom, both of which have Belfast sinks.
On the first landing there are two bedrooms both with fireplaces as well as a bathroom with a cast iron bath and a separate shower.
On the second landing there are two more en suite bedrooms with marble fireplaces.
The top landing accommodates two more bedrooms, one of which is plumbed and wired for a shower and sauna.
Outside, the private garden and orchard are enclosed and accommodate a lawn with many mature trees and gravel pathways. The house overlooks the front paddock with wonderful views over the lawn field.
A tannery yard includes a former dairy. The house yard comprises an attractive limestone stable block with bell tower, three loose boxes, a coach house and pump house. The Middle Yard comes with sheds and a stone barn.
The remainder of the 46 acres are quality lands currently under corn.
