Embracing cultural tourism

‘You have real stuff on your main street’

Jennifer Linn - Staff Writer

By Jennifer Linn

Daily News Staff Writer

The second and final day of discussion with cultural tourism advisors wrapped up Friday. Area residents attended the sessions over the past two days where discussions were centered around how to help Mason County take advantage of its unique history.

Stephen Burnett and Carl Bray of Burnett Thorne Cultural Tourism in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, came to Ludington to get a snapshot of the community and put together a report and develop a plan to implement a cultural tourism program.

Burnett and Bray agreed the area is an interesting community that has a lot of potential. The duo was fascinated by the variety of businesses located in Ludington’s downtown corridors.

“You have real stuff on your main street,” Bray said with enthusiasm. He was impressed to see a tool-and-die plant and an ice cream manufacturer mixed in with retail shops on Ludington Avenue.

Burnett said to make the most of cultural tourism in a community it’s important to interpret heritage and history so people can learn about it.

“What’s more compelling to a visitor then a life story that relates to their life,” Burnett said.“I’d like to see a plaque hanging on the wall at these businesses saying when it was started, by whom and what it is.”

Bray and Burnett said it’s important to harness what makes Ludington special.

“For example, if you were taking guests and showing them around town, where would you take them, what would you show them?” Burnett said.

Burnett and Bray were invited to hold discussions Thursday and Friday by the Convention & Visitors Bureau, Downtown Ludington Board and the Ludington & Scottville Chamber of Commerce.

Topics of discussions ranged from shopping to downtown districts to waterfront tourism to agritourism.

“We do not approach this on the principal that one size fits all,” Bray said.“We want to make it a made-in-Ludington solution.”

“We want to show people what they have right under their noses.” Burnett said.“You can improve the quality of life by improving what you already have.”
