Hey there, it seems Robert Zoost is the hot topic, but how about talking about something positive.
My husband and I are wanting to move to Kelowna, and I want to ask some people who actually live there what it's like.
I've done some other searching and found a lot of negative things - mostly from those who don't live in Kelowna and seem to have opinions based on nothing.
I want to hear some feedback from some actual people who live there and know what their talking about.

PS. One negative comment I've heard is that it's full of Albertans. We are Albertans so that's actually a positive thing to us.:-)

Kelowna is a beautiful but expensive place to live. I just left there after 2 years. Plenty of shopping, everything you could want really. Great places to eat but I recommend making reservations. Night life was hit and miss in my experience. The downtown core needs re-developing in a major way, but that is in the works.

The summer is incredible provided you have the cashflow to enjoy the activities. If you have a boat you're gonna love it. Winters are fun if you enjoy skiing, both Silverstar and Big White are reasonably close.

The people were predominantly friendly but on the downside I found alot of big fish in a small pond syndrome about town, moreso than in other cities I've lived. Kelownafornia. Real Estate prices are ridiculous. I also found it somewhat isolated, 3-4 hour drive to Vancouver if the Coq was open in the winter. All n all, I found it more of a great place to visit than to live.

That's the main thing that worries me...the cost of living. We're playing it smart though...buying a modest trailer on the westside to begin with, and work our way up from there. I'm a bit nervous about jobs as it seems there are a ton of them, but none pay too good. My husband is dead set on moving their though, so I guess we'll give it a go!
Where we live is all big fish in a small pond syndrome too. Guess we won't get away from that, but we're used to it anyway!

It's not cheap to live in Kelowna but it all depends on your expectation level too. There is alot of money there but most of it is made elsewhere from what I was able to find. I would like to recommend T-Bone's meat shop, it is one place I'm really going to miss. A BBQer's paradise that place is. Good Luck!!

Well, we've been applying and have been successful at gettting call backs, but everyone needs someone asap, so they're not willing to wait a month until we move.
In a way I guess it's a good sign, still would be nice to have something locked in though.

Kelowna is very expensive and wages are low for the average person. Lots of minimum wage work, not much for professionals and white collar. It is a business town, be careful of snakes there are many in the business community here. Business community lacks a sense of professionalism, but that may change with the loss of the "big fish in little pond" mentality and increased competition. Kelowna is not a place to live if you are starting out, in my opinion. It is a place where you go to live out your retirement years....consequently, the town is closed after 9 pm generally. YAWN. A huge gap here between the working poor and the rich retirees. They are bringing Jamaicans to Kelowna now, to work the low wage jobs that no one wants. Slave labour amidst luxury wineries and golf....What a weird place. Other areas of the Okanagan have much more soul, like Penticton, Salmon Arm, etc.

I Love Kelowna! I grew up in the Kootenays but moved to Kelowna for business in 1990. Got married and moved to NB for seven years. I like the East coast but I missed the mountains too much so moved back to Kelowna in 2002.

I found work and consistently increased my income in Kelowna but I still do not have enough to purchase a house. The good news is that house prices seem to be dropping or at least not going up anymore. A mobile home or modular home may be an option but if I go that route then I would want a contract from the park owner that the land will not be sold and if it is that I would be compensated. I cannot see the park owners just being content with a mobile home park when they could just sell and enjoy the rest of their lives with millions to spare! One nice house lot here is $200 000 +.

Regardless of the housing expense I love it here as the hiking is great and the people are just as good. There is ample opportunity to get involved with the community. ahhh...time to hit the beach...talk to you later!

A good hiking site (mine) is http://www.tracksandtrails.ca and shows a few good trails around Kelowna and the Okanagan.
One of many good community websites is http://www.willowparkchurch.com

Just thought I'd quickly update that my husband and I made our move to Kelowna the end of July and are absolutely loving it!! We bought a great double wide on the West Side, and even with lot rent, our cost of living is really affordable. I got an office job immidiately paying almost as much as I was making in Alberta, and my husband is in school full time taking a diploma in Urban and Land Economics.
We find the cost of living here to be just as much, if not less, than what we were paying in Alberta. The one exception is that our quality of life is soooooo much better. There is so much to see and do here....we've barely even cracked the surface! LOL
Now we'll just continue to watch the housing market crash so we can scoop up a nice house at a good price in about 1 years time.

Hopefully, due to Canada's slightly different system from say the UK & US, the country will recover faster and people won't be so edgey about Real Estate and the general state of the economy.

Kelowna is a destination place to come live for so many.. but they not able to get here from there... real estate is not going to recover all across Canada, but remain reletively strong in the most desired place to live in our country..
- This will surely restrict many from selling their homes, etc. in other places so as to move here.. the time to do so ... was ... Now many are stuck, where they be.. my message is short... better 5-10 years early ..... then one day to late..
- I love Kelowna, I love Penticton when I retire it will be in Osoyoos- won't need auto just my suped up customized -- Rolls (canardly)... scooter electric powerd (PV) Photo-Voltaic charged battery's for going to Timmy's to meet the other custom scoot's ... My Rolls .. will roll down town & (canardly) get back home, in the PM.. South Okanagan Rocks - I'll Roll- Eh?

Have got some specific questions:
Are there many traffic jams in Kelowna in general? Specifically on hw 97 bridge.
Is it easy to use a bike for commuting (btw is it legal to use hw 97 bridge for biking or walking)?
How many days per year (weatherwise) can an average person use a bike for commuting?
Are there any good flight connections to Europe from Kelowna airport (I presume all of them are indirect)?
As far as I understand it does not rain a lot during the year and the air is relatively dry (please correct me if I am wrong). Does it get excessively hot during the summer?
Is it true that “the town is closed after 9 pm generally”? Can you find a decent pub which serves variety of draft beer and works beyond 9 pm?

I have lived here for 8 years now, and have to tell you, overall Kelowna is not a nice place to live unless you have millions to be able to purchase a home away from the City.
Kelowna is an out of control drug City. There is no proper law enforcement, and you will need to sleep with earplugs as the noise from loud mufflers doesn't ever stop, all year round.
Biking sucks because drivers will kill you if your on the road.Even though you can bike for 10 months of the year, your risking your life as the drivers are absolutely out of control, driving well over the speed limit, with no concern for anything or anyone.
Traffic is insane, as it appears no-one works and all everyone does is drive around burning gas.
Winter here is mainly cloudy and gloomy, although warm for the most part. Some winters can be cold and lots of snow, and others, no snow, lots of rain and cloud. Summer is nice and hot, mainly sunny from March to November.
After dark, this City transforms into a complete nightmare when drug dealing, gangsters and freaks line the streets. Punks have destroyed this City, gang members should be all shot, as well as drug users and those who have loud cars.
You want to get high or drunk, this is the place. Gangsters or drug dealers will sell you the dope, and Night clubs run by Gangsters and Hells Angels will feed you booze until you puke.
Bring lots of money because there is nothing happening here that allows you to get more then 12 or 15 bucks an hour.
City Council members are cracked.
Not enough Police.
Too many Crackheads and druggies driving and walking around day and night.
Grade 13 in Kelowna is using drugs and becomming a drug dealer of some sort.
There are some nice people, and lots of very nice places to visit, or hike to. The lake is nice if the punks werent hanging around all the time.
If you plan on moving here, bring a few automatic machine guns and get rid of about 50,000 absolutely useless wastes of skin punks that have destroyed this City.
Kelowna is not for the average person.
It is for those interested in a very confused complicated lifestyle.
If you want a quality of life, don't ever think of living here or in Vernon.
Drugs Crime Freaks Gansters Alcoholics Weirdos, did I mention Druggies Punks Wanna Bees etc.
And a group of Drug Dealing Gangters posing as contractors driving around in 50-80,000 jacked up 4x4 trucks on Cellphones.
At night when you go to bed and try to sleep, hundreds of criminals and druggies are driving around your neighborhood not allowing you proper rest and sleep.
Many people go missing here or get killed here by Gangsters, so bring a machine gun.
Bike riders and pedestrians get hit or killed by dangerous drivers regularly.
People are absolutely Fucked here!
If I could, I would move out of here, but where can one move to?
And dont forget, if you move here and buy a house, bend over and pay 12% or a Land Title Transfer Tax of about $6800 on the average home.
Gas is more here by far, no discounts of 3-1/2 cents per litre like other Cities.
Overpriced groceries at most places except Superstore and Walmart. Stay away from others or they will take all your money. Local fruit is too expensive.
I could go on all day.
Kelowna has a couple of things going for it. The Lake and the nearby mountains and sunshine.
There is nothing else going here.
More bad points by far then good ones.
Take my advice, stay away, or you to will need to go on medication.
You cant get a family doctor or dentist here either.
Waiting times at the Hospital are unacceptable.
People are flakey!
Did I mention druggies, greed, crime, noise, Idiots, punks, gangsters, crack, theft, racing, squealing tires, murder, etc.
If you must move here, please spend a month finding the right location, or you will be sorry.
Also check out the street you are going to live on by watching it for a solid week around the clock, or you might buy a place right in between drughouses, and then youll have fun.

Did I mention bringing a machine gun to get rid of freaks etc? Do so because you will be sorry. Police will not solve your problems and complaints, they are understaffed here by 100 members.
Make sure you soup up your vehicle because you need to drive double the speed limit to fit in.
But dont ever get caught as they have an extra High risk driver premium if you get a speeding ticket. A $340 ticket will actually work out to $1300 over 3 years, so dont get caught.
Be prepared if you plan to move here, there are no good jobs and the economy is not good here. No Industry but the drug and hotel industry.
If your a gangster, you will fit in just right. You can do whatever you please because it will take a while before you get caught.
If you dont like what I have said, its all true, so stay away from this hell hole of a city!
