I have lived in Kelowna for approx. 2o years now and I can tell you it has gone downhill as far as I'm concerned.Yeh the lakes and ski hills are nice. There are alot of average paying jobs here (approx.$12/hour).Min. wage is not $15/hour as someone posted it is around the area of $9/hour although many places pay a little more than that. One of the biggest problems in Kelowna is the huge lack of affordable housing. If you don't have a very good paying job here its hard to get by. People here are having trouble finding places to rent (very expensive) and the cost to buy a home has sky rocketed in the last few years and will probably continue to rise. Kelowna has become a place for the well to do.The homeless and the drug addicted street creatures continues to grow and have become quite a problem in the last few years( ie.com mitting crimes and break ins) and all the while our incompetant mayor,in all her wisdom, wants to build more highrises for the rich people to live in.So before moving here you really might want to look into thses things further as the lakes and beaches may not look so good if thats where your sleeping because you can't afford housing.

Kelowna is no different than any other city of the same size, if you go there and can't get a good job in 3 months or less then your not trying hard enough or your education level is not up to par. If you smoke pot (recreationaly) then you are going to find it hard because you can't cope with the stress as well as you could if you didn't.
I have 2 brothers in there 20's that moved there and both are working full time paying there bills and having a great time, although the younger one almost gave up and came back to Oshawa. Once he realized that the ball and chain (weed) was holding his mind and ambition back he hit the road and landed a $20 per hour + bonus job with a big furniture store-he just finished high school. They had been looking to fill the position for 2 months and he got it. My advise is get rid of any baggage you may have and start small and keep upgrading, keep looking for better even if you are working, just don't stop looking to improve, nobody is going to hold your hand or put up your tent-so to speak. Kelowna has countless programs available to people who are willing to change, if you want a quick fix then try Alberta.
As far as the housing goes unless your making $30,000+ then you should consider a roommate or two that share the same vision as you do because if you don't your going to come on here and complain about rent being to high and the homeless and drug addicts-which have nothing to do with rent prices by the way. Good luck people and never give up!

That's why it has the highest rate of millionairs in Canada comparred to cities with similar
population sizes. You want to live in NewYork City you pay it's simple, no different elseware.
Start small it's simple, go buy a case of small bottles of that stuff you spray on your windshield so that rain beeds off quickly and really helps you see at night and during bad weather. Find a Sunday flea market and rent a booth or table area and make some props for demo (2 pieces of glass) and a charrity box from a local charrity (human society is a good one), now sell it to everyone $5 per bottle or 3 for $15 and donate $2 to your local hospital, make sure they know there donating, put the $2 in the box right in front of them they love that stuff. Explain to them that 1 small bottle in your washer fluid resovour will extend that big jug of washer fluid at least twice or 3 times by mixing it in with the washer fluid not spraying or rubbing it (as most ones say to)directly on your windshield, it pays for itself right away, because they will use the sprayer less. I swear try it yourself. Now the key is that when they buy washer fluid next it has to be soap-free because soap clings to the mineral oil and it washes off the windshield farely quickley, resulting in more applications needed. Key points-Everytime you use your sprayer your reapply the solution with no extra effort and when you run out the last few sprays will be more concentrated that it will last you longer and provide extra beeding untill you can refill, it's like having extra safety instead of running dry and that sucks in bad weather or dirty roads. Now if you can make a profit then you can make your own stuff with mineral oil, water and salt , buy some bottles and make a sticker label for now and go nuts. It's all about starting small, hope this helps someone.

Min wage is NOT 15/hour..I have lived here all my life...is a nice place, but very hard to live in. Living is high, wages are very low- average wage is more like $9-10 if you are doing retail type jobs. It is very hard to find a place to live here that one can afford if working a min wage type of job. This city is great for tourists...but the locals often struggle. Even with a univ education, it can be hard. There is no big biz here...and so having a degree doesn't always help...because work here tends to be restaurant/retail kinda stuff (to cater to tourists). Still, you can make it on a low wage find...or have money to live a higher-end life here...it is a very nice city....great outdoors..

I've lived in kelowna for the last 10 years and belive me kelowna is not that great there is tons of work but most of them pay minimum wage and if you don't bring a lot of money good luck buying a house, have a look at the mls website. kelowna is a small city, very small around 100,000 people live here. and for those saying 15$ an hour is minimum wage let me tell you something there is a metal shop down the road from my house and they have a big sign "now hiring" it lists all the trades they need like certified welders and they will pay an ammazing 9$ an hour. if you are retired kelowna is a great place, it has nice mild winters and lots of sun in the summer, but if you are not retired kelowna is a bad place to live, its a nice place to go on holidays but not to live. haven't you heard of the sunshine tax? someone saied there is a lot of millionaires here .... its their summer homes i can guaranty you they didn't make their money here. you really want to know how great kelowna is just google Aaron Derbyshire.

Kelowna is a nice place in summer, lakes and boating are great and so is the weather. But fall and Winter are dreary and grey with nothing going on. I have been here a year and I find there is a lack of charm and culture here. It's a city of mini malls and everybody seems to drive everywhere. Drugs and homeless are a growing problem here. Buying property is so so expensive.
Surrounding areas are beautiful, lots of outdoor activities which is a bonus. But downtown pretty much sucks!

I grew up in the Okanagan and went to University in Kelowna. I left in 1997 for the wide open spaces of Calgary. My family still lives in the Okanagan.

If you are thinking of moving to Kelowna here are some things you need to know.

1. It is a great place to vacation. If you don't enjoy the things that your city offers now because you are too busy working - it will be the same there. If you want a lifestyle where you work less and play more and you have money then Kelowna may be for you. If you don't have money -- vacations may be best.

2. It isn't all sunshine and warm weather. The summers are great and hot, spring and fall are my favorite times there. Note: The grey clouds come in end of October and leave early April. There isn't always snow to cover the dead plants and because Kelowna is in a valley you will feel socked in. Not a good place if you have seasonal depression.

3. If you like to swim, golf, and ski then you'll love the recreational aspects of Kelowna and you won't have to travel for a vacation. Remember these activities can be very expensive so bring money.

4. Be prepared to take a pay cut. A Journeymen mechanic can make around $30/hr in Calgary but only $20 -$24 in Kelowna. Unless you have your own business make sure you have a job lined up before you move because the pay cheque may be less than you bargained for.

5. The drugs are a huge issue in the area. You may think oh we have a drug problem here, how much worse could it be there -- it keeps the economy running there. example: small town in the Okanagan - the police station is located next to an apartment building where meth and drugs are rampent. Even shootings over drugs happening and the police were unable to do anything due to the courts. The city condemned the building in order to shut it down.(BC courts are lienent with drug pushers and they have tied the hands of the police).

3. The middle class is quickly becomeing smaller and smaller there. For the most part it is those that have and those that serve them. The rich don't live there all the time, for many it's a second house and they do business in Vancouver or Calgary not Kelowna so they don't increase jobs when they are increasing house prices.

4. The infrastructure is badly designed and during the summer months the amount of people that converge on the roads is 10xs normal. If you need to get to work it becomes a head ache.
They are working at this and if you know the back roads you can get around it sometimes. During the August long weekend I swear there are more Alberta plates than BC plates.

5. B.C. stands for bring cash..... Kelowna has a sunshine tax.(for the few months of sunshine). What it means is you pay more to live there and make less for the same job.

Kelowna is beautiful just know that it isn't vacation 100% of the time. If you are going to live there, your life will be the same just with different scenery and weather. Those that live there choose it for a lifestyle and are willing to pay for it.

If you are not happy where you are living now, don't think that Kelowna has all the answers. They way you feel there during a vacation is different than if you lived there - after all a vacation is about happiness and life is stress.

Fort Mac is very expensive too and not a very beautiful place and that's being nice.

If you can afford Fort Mac you won't be too surprised by the cost of Kelowna, the only thing is you won't be getting paid like you do up there.

Live in Fort Mac, save the money best you can and buy a place in Kelowna to move to once you've saved as much as you think you will need.

I think I like Mike Money's post the best,(the first one, not the second one. I don't even understand the second one). I think it's all about your expectations and the steps you take. Yes, Kelowna is expensive, but isn't a lot of other cities too? I lived in Grande Prairie, AB for 11 years and it's insane to live there!! Sure the wages are good, but the quality of life sucks.
As for Kelowna real estate, yeah its crazy, but do you have to go buy at $450,000 house? Or couldn't you start small and buy a decent trailer for $120,000 and work your way up from there?
Get a job, but continue gaining education and looking for a better one?
Obviously I'm speculating, I've never been there. But I come from a place where it is expensive to live, and a lot of people bit off more than they can chew in an effort to 'keep up with the Jones's'

I was thinking of checking out B.C. for a possible move, how are the trades in that area? I'm a 1st year machinist in Toronto looking for some varied experience and the whole auto sector is falling apart here.
