Stampeding horses killed in Milton

Two stampeding horses died last night in a bizarre incident on Tremaine Road in Milton.

Just before midnight last night, Halton Regional Police were notified of a motor vehicle collision involving horses running loose on Tremaine Road at No. 2 Sideroad.

Eight horses escaped a fenced area of a farm property and began running along Tremaine Road in a group. A citizen observed the horse stampede approaching her vehicle and pulled over to the side of the roadway. The galloping horses then ran into her vehicle. Two horses died at this location as a result.

Police arrived on scene and used vehicles to block the road to prevent the horses from running into other motor vehicles and to keep them off a nearby active railway line.

One police vehicle was parked on Tremaine Road.

The horses continued to run around, frightened as a result of nearby train noise, and vehicle lights.

The horses then stampeded toward the parked police vehicle. One horse leapt over the front of the vehicle and made contact while a second horse jumped over the rear of the police vehicle and came crashing into the back window and trunk area. The officer and his police dog were not hurt.

There was significant damage to the police vehicle and the original civilian vehicle, but no people were injured.

A third horse was examined by a veterinarian, who came to the scene. It may have to be put down due to its injuries.

After a considerable amount of effort, which included the closure of Tremaine Road for several hours, the five remaining horses were rounded up by a number of uniform and tactical police officers.

The remaining horses were taken back to their farm by their owners who lived nearby.

It remains unknown how the horses were able to escape their fenced compound on the farm
