There have been 126 homes broken into in 1 District (Milton and Halton Hills) so far this year. Culprits have been arrested for some of these, but there is no guarantee that the items stolen will ever be recovered. If you talk to someone who has had their home broken into, they will tell you that the experience of being victimized in this way results in more than just missing property. They may feel angry, violated, or unsafe in their own home.

What can you do to make your home less appealing to thieves? Ensure that your home has a lived-in appearance, especially when you are away. Make sure that the driveway is shovelled in winter and grass is cut in summer. Excessive bushes and trees on the property hide your house from passers-by, but also allow thieves to hide from your neighbours.

Motion activated lights are a good option, as they light up when someone comes on your property, attracting witnesses. Neighbours tend to ignore lights that are left on constantly.

Solid locks on your doors and windows are also a must, but they will only work if they are engaged! Don’t leave windows open or unlocked when you are out. The frames of doors are equally important. Make sure that the screws of the strike plate, which is mounted on the door frame, are at least 2 1/2 inches long.

Secure valuable property in your home, especially if it is of sentimental value. Use a safe, or another hidden location to hide small expensive items. Jewelry and electronics are the most targeted items because they are easily transported, easily converted into cash.

This information is a very basic overview of home security. If you wish to know more, go to the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctiona
