Pauline Marois, elitism and Quebec's castle market

It must be so awkward when you can't sell your castle for the $7-million you thought it was worth and realize that the political and economic instability you created as Premier may be partially responsible. Super awkward!

Premier Pauline Marois and husband Claude Blanchet sold the Ile Bizard mansion to a Belgian businessman for $6.475-million, below what they were asking for when the power couple put it on the market in July 2009.

Tough times in for the castle market in Quebec: With the one year anniversary of the PQ's election coming this fall, one has to wonder if Marois' anti-business policies are at least partially responsible for her having trouble selling the home and, when she finally did, getting over half a million less than expected. Unfamiliar with the status of the castle market in Quebec, I can only speculate.

But there is no denying that PQ power of the years has brought with it a flight of capital and, at the very least, hesitation in the business community. Canderel's Jonathan Wener gave some scathing quotes to The Gazette this week on just that very subject, saying that the PQ is putting a chill on real estate development and other investments by corporations.

With threats to apply Bill 101 to federally-regulated businesses and to small and medium-sized businesses, there is absolutely no disputing that Marois' policies will cause unease in the business community. With major corporations nervous about investing in their businesses, it stands to reason that the heads of these corporations would be equally hesitant to invest in a new, obnoxiously large fortress for a home.

So, is may seem far-fetched at first glance, but Pauline Marois is probably partially responsible for Pauline Marois not getting the $7-million she asked for her castle. She's moving into a $2.5-million Old Port condo, presumably because she wants to be closer to the people. No word if she'll hang a red square from her balcony, HoMa style
